AI search visibility is how often your brand is named or cited when people ask AI tools like Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Microsoft Copilot a question in your category. You improve it by letting each platform's crawler reach your site, publishing pages that answer questions directly, keeping your brand and product data consistent everywhere, and earning mentions on the sites those tools already trust.
This guide is for e-commerce and Shopify teams who already do SEO and want to know what changes when the answer, not the link, is the first thing a shopper sees. You will get the current usage data, a side-by-side view of how each AI surface picks its sources, a step-by-step plan, a measurement framework you can set up in an afternoon, and a list of things you can safely skip.
What is AI search visibility?
Traditional SEO measures where a page ranks. AI search visibility measures whether your brand shows up inside the generated answer. It has two parts, and they are fixed in different ways.
- Mentions: the AI names your brand or product in its answer, for example in a list of recommended running shoe brands. Mentions depend heavily on what other sites say about you: reviews, comparison articles, forums, retailer listings and press.
- Citations: the AI links to one of your pages as a source. Citations depend on your own pages being crawlable, indexed and easy to quote.
You can rank third for a keyword and still be missing from the AI Overview above you. You can also be mentioned in ChatGPT without a single link, because the answer drew on a review roundup that mentions you. A third measure matters for stores: sentiment and accuracy. Being named next to an outdated price, a discontinued product or a wrong return policy can cost you the sale even when you are visible.
Because each platform pulls from a different index, visibility is not one number. A page that does well in Google can be absent from Perplexity, and a brand that ChatGPT recommends may never appear in Copilot. That is why this guide treats each surface separately before covering the work that helps all of them at once.
Why AI search visibility matters now
The audience is already large. In its June 2026 investor presentation, Alphabet said AI Overviews have over 2.5 billion users each month, and on its Q2 2026 earnings call Sundar Pichai said AI Mode has passed 1 billion monthly active users. OpenAI reported more than 900 million weekly ChatGPT users in February 2026.

Adoption is broad, not just a tech early adopter habit. Pew Research Center has tracked the share of U.S. adults who say they have used ChatGPT since 2023, and it has more than doubled.

The bigger shift is what happens to clicks. Pew analyzed the March 2025 browsing of 900 U.S. adults and found that 18% of their Google searches produced an AI summary. When a summary appeared, people clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits, compared with 15% when there was no summary. They clicked a link inside the summary on just 1% of visits, and they were more likely to end their browsing session altogether.

Put those together and the conclusion is simple: more of your buyers will form an opinion from an AI answer before they ever reach a results page or your site. If your brand is in the answer, you stay in the consideration set even when the click never happens. If it is not, a competitor gets that slot. Our guide to zero-click searches covers the click side of this shift in more depth.
For retail specifically, AI referrals are still small but growing fast. Adobe Analytics, covering more than 1 trillion visits to U.S. retail sites, reported that traffic from generative AI tools rose 693.4% during the 2025 holiday season (Nov. 1 to Dec. 31) compared with the year before. Adobe also noted that the base of users remains modest, so treat this as a channel to build now rather than one that replaces organic search today.
How each AI platform picks its sources
The platforms reward similar things, but the crawler and index behind each one differ. Blocking the wrong user agent in robots.txt, or letting a firewall rule block it, can quietly remove you from one surface while the others look fine.
| Platform | Where answers come from | Crawler to allow | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Google's search index. Google says both may run several related searches across subtopics (query fan-out) to build one answer. | Googlebot | Pages must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. Ranking for related subtopic queries helps, not just the head term. |
| ChatGPT search | Third-party search providers plus content from OpenAI's partners. ChatGPT rewrites the question into one or more targeted queries. | OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT-User for live fetches) | OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Being well indexed across the open web matters here. |
| Perplexity | Perplexity's own index, plus live page fetches when a user asks. | PerplexityBot (Perplexity-User for live fetches) | Perplexity says PerplexityBot surfaces and links sites in results and is not used to train foundation models. |
| Claude | Anthropic's search index and live fetches for user requests. | Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User | Anthropic says blocking Claude-SearchBot may reduce your visibility and accuracy in Claude's search results. |
| Microsoft Copilot | Bing's index. | Bingbot | Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and fix Bing indexing gaps. Many teams never check Bing at all. |
Search crawlers and training crawlers are different decisions
Most AI companies run separate bots for search and for model training. GPTBot is OpenAI's training crawler; OAI-SearchBot powers ChatGPT search. ClaudeBot is Anthropic's training crawler; Claude-SearchBot powers search. Google-Extended controls whether Google uses your content for some other AI systems, and Google says it does not affect Search. You can block training bots and still be fully visible in AI search, as long as you allow the search bots. Our post on GPTBot vs OAI-SearchBot walks through the robots.txt rules.
User-triggered fetches do not always follow robots.txt
OpenAI and Perplexity both say their user-triggered agents (ChatGPT-User and Perplexity-User) may not follow robots.txt, because a person asked for the page. That means robots.txt is the right control for search indexing, but not a complete wall. If a page must not be read at all, protect it with authentication rather than a robots rule.

The signals that drive visibility on every platform
The good news is that most of the work is shared. These five signals help on every surface at once.
1. Crawl access and indexing
If a crawler cannot fetch the page, nothing else matters. Google's AI features guide lists the basics: allow crawling in robots.txt and in any CDN or hosting setup, make content easy to find through internal links, and keep important content available as text. Product details that only load through JavaScript widgets, tabs that fetch content on click, or reviews rendered in an iframe may never be read.
2. Answer-first, well-structured pages
AI tools pull short passages that answer a specific question. Pages that state the answer in the first sentence or two, use subheadings phrased the way people ask, and keep one idea per section are easier to quote accurately. For a store, this means collection pages with a short buying guide, product pages with real specs and use cases in plain text, and FAQs that answer the questions your support team actually gets.
3. Entity clarity and consistency
AI systems need to understand who you are and what you sell. Use the same brand name, description, address, policies and product details on your site, Google Business Profile, Merchant Center, marketplaces, social profiles and directories. Organization and Product structured data help search engines connect those facts, as long as the markup matches what is visible on the page, which Google calls out directly. See entity SEO for the full approach.
4. Third-party mentions and reviews
When someone asks for "the best" anything, AI answers lean on review sites, comparison articles, forums and press. Brands that are discussed widely and positively on those sites get named more often, whether or not their own pages are cited. This is the slowest signal to move and the hardest for a competitor to copy.
5. Product data for shopping answers
For e-commerce, product feeds are a direct line into AI shopping results. Google recommends keeping Merchant Center and Business Profile information current. Shopify's agentic storefronts feature, managed under Sales channels > Agentic in your admin, lets eligible stores list products in AI channels including ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta surfaces. Clean titles, accurate prices and stock, and complete attributes in your catalog now feed both classic shopping results and AI answers.
How to improve AI search visibility, step by step
This is the order we work in, because each step makes the next one measurable.
- Check crawler access. Run your domain through our Robots.txt and AI Crawler Tester and confirm Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot are allowed on the pages you want cited. Then check your CDN and bot protection settings for blocks that robots.txt will not show.
- Confirm indexing in Google and Bing. Verify the site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Use URL Inspection on your top collection and product pages and fix anything not indexed. Bing coverage is what Copilot answers draw on.
- Build a prompt set. Write 20 to 30 questions a customer would ask, from "what is the best [product] for [use]" and "[your brand] vs [competitor]" to "is [your brand] legit" and "[your brand] return policy". Group them by funnel stage.
- Record a baseline. Run every prompt on each platform. For each answer, note whether you were mentioned, whether you were cited, which competitors appeared, which third-party pages were cited, and whether the facts about you were correct.
- Fix your entity and product data. Align brand name, descriptions, policies, prices and availability across your site, feeds and major profiles. Correct any wrong facts the baseline exposed at their source.
- Restructure your highest-value pages. Put the direct answer first on category, product and guide pages. Add comparison tables, specs and clear FAQs where they help a shopper. Our AEO Checker flags pages that are hard for AI tools to extract.
- Earn mentions where AI looks. Use the third-party pages from your baseline as a target list. Pitch reviewers and gift guide editors, get listed on comparison pages that already get cited, and ask customers for reviews on the platforms that show up.
- Re-run the prompt set monthly. Compare against the baseline, log what changed and why, and move effort to the prompts and platforms where you are still missing.
How to measure AI search visibility
No single tool shows the full picture, so combine first-party data with prompt tracking. Here is a framework that covers every major surface.
| What to measure | Where to find it | How often | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic | Search Console Performance report, Web search type | Weekly | Google folds AI feature data into Web search with no separate filter. Watch impressions and clicks for queries where AI features appear. |
| Copilot and Bing AI citations | Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance report | Monthly | How often your pages are cited in Copilot and Bing's AI answers, and for which grounding queries. |
| AI referral sessions and revenue | GA4, filtered by source: chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com, gemini.google.com, claude.ai | Weekly | Which AI tools send visits, and how those visits convert compared with organic search. |
| Mentions, citations and share of voice | Your fixed prompt set, run manually or with a monitoring tool | Monthly | Visibility that never produces a click, plus which competitors and third-party pages win each prompt. |
| Answer accuracy | The same prompt set, checked against your current prices, policies and product range | Monthly | Wrong facts to fix at the source before they cost you sales. |
A few details make the numbers more reliable. OpenAI says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links, so you can segment those visits in GA4; if you build your own tracked links for campaigns, our UTM builder keeps naming consistent. Some AI traffic can arrive with no referrer and lands in Direct, so a rise in direct visits to deep product pages can be an AI signal worth checking. And because Google does not split out AI Overview clicks, compare click-through rates on the same queries before and after AI features appeared rather than expecting a clean AI line. Our guide to AI brand monitoring covers prompt tracking tools and setup.

Common AI visibility problems and how to fix them
When the baseline shows a gap, it usually traces back to one of a handful of causes.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Visible in Google AI Overviews but never in ChatGPT or Copilot | Weak Bing indexing, or OAI-SearchBot blocked by robots.txt or a firewall | Verify in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap, allow OAI-SearchBot and OpenAI's search bot IP ranges |
| Brand is mentioned but your pages are never cited | Answers rely on third-party reviews; your own pages lack direct, quotable answers | Add answer-first sections, specs and FAQs to the pages that match each prompt |
| Competitors named for "best" prompts, you are not | Missing from the review roundups and comparison pages the AI cites | Target the cited third-party pages with outreach, samples and review requests |
| AI states the wrong price, policy or product details | Inconsistent data across your site, feeds, marketplaces and old pages | Correct the source data everywhere, update or redirect outdated pages, keep Merchant Center current |
| Cited for informational prompts but not product prompts | Product data is thin, or key details only render with JavaScript | Put specs and use cases in page text, complete product structured data and feed attributes |
What you do not need for AI search
A lot of AI search advice adds work that no platform has asked for. Google states you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that meeting the requirements does not guarantee inclusion. An llms.txt file is optional, and no major AI search platform has said it uses one for ranking or citations.
You also do not need separate "AI versions" of your pages, keyword-stuffed FAQ blocks, or a different site for each chatbot. The platforms read the same web your customers do. Put the time into access, clear answers, accurate data and a real reputation, which help on every surface at once and keep paying off in classic search.
Where to start this month
If you only do three things in the next 30 days, make them these: confirm every search crawler can reach your key pages, write and run your 20 to 30 prompt baseline across Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Copilot, and fix the wrong facts and missing answers it turns up. That gives you a measurable starting point and usually exposes the biggest gap within a week.
If you want help turning that baseline into a plan for your store, our AI search optimization team works with e-commerce and Shopify brands, or you can get in touch for a quick review.
We'll score your AI visibility, show you where competitors get recommended instead and map the first pages and fixes to change that.
