Title Tag Checker: Ideal Title and Meta Length

Why title length is about pixels, not characters, and how to write titles and meta descriptions that display fully and earn the click.

Google does not set a character limit for title tags. It truncates titles that are too wide to fit the result, which on desktop works out to roughly 600 pixels, or about 50 to 60 characters for most titles. Use a title tag checker like the QCK Title Tag & Meta Description Checker to measure your title and description in pixels and preview the snippet before you publish.

What a title tag and meta description are

The title tag is the <title> element in a page's head. Google uses it as the main source for the clickable headline in search results, and browsers show it in the tab. The meta description is a meta name="description" tag that summarizes the page. Google may show it as the snippet under the title.

Neither is visible on the page, but both act as your listing in search results. A title tag checker shows how they will look in that listing and flags anything likely to be cut off.

Why title length is measured in pixels

Characters have different widths. A capital W is much wider than a lowercase i, so two titles with the same character count can render at very different widths. That is why "keep it under 60 characters" is only a rule of thumb. A title full of wide capitals may be truncated at 50 characters, while a narrow one may fit 65.

When a title is too wide, Google cuts it and adds an ellipsis. Meta descriptions are truncated in a similar way, and the visible length varies by device and query. Treat roughly 150 to 160 characters as a practical target for descriptions, and put the most important information first so truncation never removes it.

Google may rewrite your title

Google sometimes replaces the title tag with other text from the page, such as the H1 or anchor text pointing at the page. It does this more often when a title is very long, stuffed with keywords, duplicated across pages, or does not describe the content. The best way to keep your own title is to write one that is accurate, concise and unique.

Why titles matter for SEO, AI search and revenue

The title is one of the clearest signals of what a page is about, and it is the first thing a searcher reads. Better titles can raise click-through rate at the same ranking position, which means more traffic without moving up. For a revenue page, more clicks at the same position is extra revenue at no extra cost. The organic CTR guide shows how to estimate what that is worth.

AI search tools also read titles when choosing and labeling sources. A title that names the topic plainly is easier to match to a question than a clever one.

How to use the QCK title tag checker

  1. Open the Title Tag & Meta Description Checker.
  2. Type or paste your draft title.
  3. Type or paste your draft meta description, and the page URL if you want a complete preview.
  4. Watch the pixel width measurement and the live search result preview as you edit.
  5. Rewrite until the title fits without truncation and the key message of the description appears early.
  6. Copy the final versions into your CMS or SEO app and publish.

Because the tool works on text you type, you can use it before a page exists, which makes it useful for writers and for planning new collection or landing pages.

How to read the results and write better titles

ResultWhat to do
Title too wideCut filler words, move the brand name to the end or drop it, shorten modifiers
Title very shortAdd a useful qualifier: product type, audience, location or benefit
Description truncated earlyMove the main point and call to action to the first sentence
Description very shortAdd specifics: what the page offers, who it is for, why click

A simple title formula

For most pages, this pattern works: Primary topic + key qualifier | Brand. For example, "Women's Trail Running Shoes, Wide Fit | Brand". For guides, lead with the query: "How to Check Redirects: 301 vs 302 Explained". Keep the primary keyword near the start, where it is least likely to be cut and most likely to be read.

Writing meta descriptions that get clicks

  • Describe what the visitor gets, specifically.
  • Mention differentiators that are true and verifiable: free shipping, size range, a free tool.
  • Write a unique description for each important page. If you cannot, it can be better to leave it empty and let Google generate a snippet than to duplicate one sitewide.

Tips and mistakes to avoid

  • Do not repeat the keyword. "Running Shoes | Best Running Shoes | Running Shoes Sale" looks spammy and invites a rewrite.
  • Avoid boilerplate. If every product title ends with the same long tagline, the useful part gets pushed out of view.
  • Keep titles and H1s aligned. A mismatch can make Google choose its own title. See the heading tags guide.
  • Test changes with data. Change titles on a group of pages, wait several weeks, and compare clicks and CTR in Search Console against the previous period.

Title and description tests are among the fastest ways to lift organic clicks on pages that already rank. Our SEO services include snippet testing at scale, and our CRO team applies the same testing discipline on-site.

FAQ

Questions & answers

How many characters should a title tag be?
Google truncates by pixel width rather than characters. Around 50 to 60 characters usually fits on desktop, but wide letters can push a shorter title past the limit, so measure in pixels.
How long should a meta description be?
There is no fixed limit, but Google typically truncates snippets around 150 to 160 characters on desktop. Put the key message first so truncation does not remove it.
Why did Google change my title tag?
Google may rewrite titles that are too long, keyword-stuffed, duplicated or not descriptive of the page. A concise, accurate, unique title is the best way to have yours displayed.
Should I include my brand name in title tags?
Usually yes, at the end, if space allows. On pages where the title is already long, drop the brand to keep the descriptive part visible.
