Google SEO vs Bing SEO: Key Differences for Stores

Google and Bing reward the same fundamentals, but Bing adds IndexNow, a desktop-heavy audience and a direct line into Copilot. Here is what differs and a checklist for stores.

Robert Battle · Updated

Key takeaways
  • In StatCounter's September 2026 data, Bing had 9.89% of US search overall but 18.8% on US desktop and 2.15% on US mobile.
  • Bing supports IndexNow for instant URL submission (up to 10,000 URLs per request); Google does not participate.
  • Bing lists six ranking parameters in order of importance: relevance, quality and credibility, user engagement, freshness, location and page load time.
  • Microsoft says Copilot sends generated queries to the Bing search service to ground its answers, so Bing indexing affects Copilot citations.
  • Optimize for Google first, then add Bing Webmaster Tools, IndexNow and accurate sitemap dates in an afternoon.

Google SEO and Bing SEO share the same foundations: crawlable pages, content that matches search intent, credible links and a fast, usable site. The differences are in the details. Bing supports IndexNow for instant URL submission, publishes its ranking parameters in a plain list, honors crawl-delay, and feeds Microsoft Copilot, while Google relies on its own crawling, sitemaps and a much larger share of searches.

This guide is for e-commerce and Shopify teams who already work on Google and want to know whether Bing deserves separate effort. You'll get current market share by device, a side-by-side differences table, what each engine says about ranking in its own documentation, how Bing connects to AI answers, and an action checklist you can work through in an afternoon.

Google SEO vs Bing SEO: the short answer

Optimize for Google first, because it handles the large majority of searches. Then spend a few hours on Bing-specific setup, because the work is small and the audience is not. Almost everything that helps you rank on Google helps on Bing too, so you don't need two strategies. You need one strategy and a Bing checklist.

The gaps that actually matter for a store are operational rather than philosophical:

  • Indexing speed. Bing accepts IndexNow pings, so price changes, restocks and new products can be picked up quickly. Google does not participate in IndexNow.
  • Tooling. Bing Webmaster Tools is a separate account with its own reports, including an AI Performance report for Copilot citations.
  • Audience. Bing's share is several times higher on US desktop than on mobile, which matters if your buyers research on work computers.
  • AI reach. Microsoft says Copilot sends generated search queries to the Bing search service to ground its answers, so being indexed and ranking well on Bing affects what Copilot can cite.

How much search does Bing actually get?

StatCounter's September 2026 data puts Google at 89.94% of worldwide search across all platforms and Bing at 5.29%. In the United States the gap is narrower: Google 85.19% and Bing 9.89%.

Device matters more than most teams realize. On US desktop, Bing's share in September 2026 was 18.8%, compared with 2.15% on US mobile. If your store sells to businesses, older buyers or anyone who shops from a work laptop, Bing traffic is likely a bigger slice for you than the headline number suggests.

Bing's index also reaches beyond bing.com. DuckDuckGo says it largely sources its traditional links and images from Bing, and DuckDuckGo held 1.75% of US search in the same StatCounter data. Check your own analytics before you decide how much Bing matters: in GA4, compare organic sessions and revenue by source (google, bing, duckduckgo) for the last 90 days.

Key differences between Google and Bing SEO

This table compares what each engine documents in its own guidance. Where an engine doesn't publish a position, the table says so rather than guessing.

AreaGoogleBing
Ranking guidanceRanking systems guide describes many systems; PageRank is still part of core rankingPublishes six parameters in general order of importance: relevance, quality and credibility, user engagement, freshness, location, page load time
Instant URL submissionNot part of IndexNow; relies on crawling and sitemapsIndexNow supported, up to 10,000 URLs per request, shared with other participating engines
SitemapsUses lastmod if consistently accurate; ignores priority and changefreqUses lastmod to decide recrawls; says changefreq and priority have no effect
Crawl-delay in robots.txtNot supportedWebmaster Tools offers crawl control and a crawl-delay option in its robots.txt tester

AI answersAI Overviews and AI Mode in Google SearchCopilot and Bing AI summaries, grounded in Bing search results
AI citation reportingNo separate AI citation report in Search ConsoleAI Performance report (public preview since February 2026) shows citations in Copilot and Bing AI summaries

What the table leaves out is just as important: neither engine documents social signals as a ranking factor, and neither rewards keyword stuffing. Older advice that Bing "loves exact match keywords and social shares" is not supported by Bing's current guidance.

What Google says about ranking

Google's ranking systems guide (last updated December 2025) describes a set of automated systems that look at relevance, quality, usability and context. Two lines in it are worth knowing for this comparison: PageRank "continues to be part of our core ranking systems," and site-wide signals are used but don't guarantee that every page on a site ranks.

For e-commerce, Google's practical priorities are well documented in Search Central:

  • Helpful, people-first content that matches the intent of the query, which for stores usually means category pages with buying guidance and product pages with real detail.
  • Crawlable, indexable pages with clean canonicals, a robots.txt that doesn't block important sections and an accurate sitemap. Test yours with the robots.txt tester and sitemap checker.
  • Structured data for products, reviews and merchant details so listings can show price and availability. Our guide to product schema on Shopify walks through it.
  • Page experience, including Core Web Vitals, where INP replaced FID in March 2024.
  • Links that aren't manipulative. Google's spam policies list buying links for ranking, excessive link exchanges and automated link building as link spam.

Our Shopify Google SEO guide covers the Google side in depth.

What Bing says about ranking

Microsoft's support page "How Bing delivers search results" (updated March 2025) lists the parameters Bing uses, in general order of importance, while noting their weight can vary from search to search.

  1. Relevance. How closely the landing page matches the intent behind the query, including synonyms and abbreviations.
  2. Quality and credibility. Clarity of purpose, usability and presentation, plus authority signals such as what types of other websites link to the site, transparency of ownership and whether content is original or republished.
  3. User engagement. Whether people click a result, stay on it or quickly return to Bing and reformulate their query.
  4. Freshness. Bing generally prefers fresh content, especially for topics that go out of date quickly.
  5. Location and language. The user's country and city, where the page is hosted and the language of the page.
  6. Page load time. Slow pages are treated as a poor experience.

Two things stand out for stores. Freshness is explicit, which rewards keeping prices, stock status and product details current. And the credibility factors (clear ownership, original content, sources) map directly onto things a store controls: an About page with real people and contact details, original product descriptions instead of manufacturer copy, and policies that are easy to find.

Applying Bing's parameters to a product page

  • Relevance: use the words shoppers actually search in the title and H1, including common abbreviations and synonyms such as model numbers and sizes.
  • Quality and credibility: show who makes or sells the product, link to your shipping and returns policies, and cite sources for any performance or health claims.
  • User engagement: put price, availability, key specs and reviews above the fold so a searcher doesn't bounce back to Bing to find them.
  • Freshness: update stock status, prices and seasonal details promptly, then ping IndexNow so Bing sees the change.
  • Location: if you sell in several countries, use the correct language and currency on each market's pages.
  • Page load time: compress images and limit heavy apps and scripts on product templates.

IndexNow and Bing Webmaster Tools

IndexNow is an open protocol for telling search engines that a URL was added, updated or deleted. According to the IndexNow documentation, you host a key file on your site, then send single URLs or up to 10,000 URLs per POST request, and participating engines automatically share submitted URLs with each other. The current list of participating engines includes Bing, Yandex, Seznam, Naver, Yep, the Internet Archive and Amazonbot. Google is not on it.

For stores, Bing's May 2025 Webmaster Blog post on IndexNow for shopping and ads puts it simply: IndexNow tells search engines that something has changed, and structured data tells them what changed. The same post says Shopify has built-in IndexNow support. Confirm that your store's URLs are arriving in Bing Webmaster Tools' IndexNow report rather than assuming it.

Microsoft's documentation for Microsoft Copilot and Copilot Chat says that when web search is enabled, Copilot generates a short search query from the user's prompt, sends it to the Bing search service, and uses what comes back to compose the answer. Microsoft's Bing support page also says Bing sometimes shows AI-generated summaries above its main results, with links to sources.

In February 2026, Bing launched AI Performance in Bing Webmaster Tools as a public preview, showing how often a site is cited across Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing and select partner integrations. Its recommendations for earning citations will look familiar: keep content fresh with IndexNow, deepen coverage of topics you're cited for, use clear headings, tables and FAQ sections, and support claims with evidence.

ChatGPT search is a different case. OpenAI has said ChatGPT search draws on third-party search providers and content from its partners, but it has not published how much of that comes from Bing, so treat any claim that "ChatGPT is just Bing" with caution. Our guide on how to appear in ChatGPT covers OpenAI's crawlers and what you can control.

Action checklist for e-commerce stores

Work through this in order. Most stores can finish the first five steps in a single afternoon.

  1. Measure Bing's value. In GA4, compare organic sessions, conversion rate and revenue from Google, Bing and DuckDuckGo for the last 90 days.
  2. Set up Bing Webmaster Tools. Import your site and sitemaps from Google Search Console.
  3. Turn on IndexNow. Confirm Shopify's built-in support is reporting URLs in Bing Webmaster Tools, or use your platform's IndexNow integration.
  4. Fix sitemap dates. Make sure lastmod reflects real content changes, not the time the sitemap was generated. Rebuild if needed with the sitemap generator.
  5. Check robots.txt for bingbot. Make sure you aren't blocking Bing from collections or products, and only set a crawl-delay if your server genuinely needs it.
  6. Validate product structured data. Price, availability, GTIN, brand and reviews should match what's on the page. Use the schema validator.
  7. Rewrite your top product descriptions. Replace manufacturer copy on your best sellers with original detail, sizing and use cases.
  8. Strengthen credibility pages. Clear About, Contact, shipping and returns pages help both engines' quality assessments and shoppers.
  9. Review AI Performance monthly. Note which pages Copilot cites and which grounding queries appear, then improve those pages first.

One strategy, two engines

Google still decides most of your organic revenue, so it sets the strategy. Bing adds a desktop-heavy audience, a direct line into Copilot and tools Google doesn't offer, like IndexNow and an AI citation report, for a few hours of setup. Do the shared work once, add the Bing checklist, and review both engines' data monthly. FAQ

Questions & answers

Is Bing SEO different from Google SEO?
The fundamentals are the same: relevant content, crawlable pages, credible links and fast pages. The main differences are Bing's support for IndexNow, its published ranking parameters, crawl-delay support and its role in grounding Microsoft Copilot.
Is Bing worth optimizing for in 2026?
Usually yes, because the extra work is small. StatCounter put Bing at 9.89% of US search in September 2026 and 18.8% on US desktop, and Copilot uses Bing results to ground its answers.
Does Google support IndexNow?
No. The IndexNow participating engines list includes Bing, Yandex, Seznam, Naver, Yep, the Internet Archive and Amazonbot, but not Google. Google relies on crawling and sitemaps.
Does ChatGPT use Bing?
OpenAI says ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers and partner content, but it has not published how much comes from Bing. Microsoft Copilot, by contrast, is documented as grounding answers in the Bing search service.
Does Bing use social signals for ranking?
Bing's current ranking guidance does not mention social signals. It lists relevance, quality and credibility, user engagement, freshness, location and page load time.
