To measure brand awareness, track five signals together: branded search volume, direct traffic, share of voice (or share of search) against competitors, how often AI assistants mention your brand, and recall from surveys. You can measure the first four for free with Google Search Console, GA4, Google Trends and a fixed set of AI prompts, and add a survey when you need to know what people remember, not just what they do.
This guide is for e-commerce and Shopify teams who want a brand number they can report every month without buying a brand tracking panel. You'll get a metrics table, step-by-step setups in each tool, a worked share of search example, a short survey you can reuse, and a guide to reading the signals together so a one-off spike doesn't fool you.
What brand awareness measurement actually tracks
Brand awareness is the share of your target market that knows your brand exists and can connect it to what you sell. You can't count that directly, so you measure it through behavior that only aware people show: searching for you by name, typing your URL, choosing you from a list, or naming you when asked about your category.
Two kinds of awareness matter, and they need different measurement:
- Unaided awareness (recall): someone names your brand when asked about your category without a prompt. This is the harder, more valuable kind, and only surveys and AI answers really capture it.
- Aided awareness (recognition): someone recognizes your brand when shown it. Branded search and direct traffic are behavioral proof of it.
The point of measuring both is to see whether awareness is turning into demand. A brand that people recognize but never search for has a consideration problem, not an awareness problem.
The 5 brand awareness metrics to track
No single number captures awareness. Each metric below covers a gap the others leave, and each has a free or low-cost way to measure it.
| Metric | What it tells you | How to measure it | How often |
|---|---|---|---|
| Branded search volume | How many people look for you by name | Search Console branded query filter (impressions and clicks); Google Trends for long-term trend | Monthly |
| Direct traffic | How many people come straight to your site | GA4 Traffic acquisition report, Direct channel, new users | Monthly |
| Share of voice or share of search | Your awareness relative to competitors | Google Trends comparison of your brand and up to four competitors | Quarterly |
| AI mentions | Whether ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI name you for category questions | A fixed prompt set run on a schedule, or an AI visibility tool | Monthly |
| Survey recall | Unaided and aided awareness in your target market | A short survey panel, or a platform brand lift study | Twice a year or per campaign |
The first three are behavioral and cheap. AI mentions are new and noisy but increasingly where category discovery happens. Surveys are the only direct measure of recall, so use them to check that the behavioral signals are telling the truth.
How to measure branded search volume
Branded search volume is the most useful single proxy for awareness, because nobody searches for a brand they've never heard of. Measure it in two places: Search Console for your actual traffic, and Google Trends for the long-term trend and competitor context.
In Google Search Console
Search Console now splits branded and non-branded queries for you. Google's help documentation defines branded queries as "search queries that include your brand name, domain, or a brand-specific product or service." To use it:
- Open the Performance report for your domain property.
- Click the filter bar and select the Query filter.
- Choose Branded.
- Set the date range to compare the last 3 months with the same period last year, so seasonality cancels out.
- Record branded impressions and branded clicks. Impressions are the closer proxy for search demand; clicks show how much of that demand reaches you.
Google notes the filter "isn't available for sub-properties" or "for sites with a low number of impressions," and its data starts from when the filter was introduced, March 11, 2025. If you can't use it, filter queries that contain your brand name and its common misspellings with a regex instead. Our Search Console performance comparison tool makes year-over-year comparisons faster.
In Google Trends
Google Trends shows relative interest, not search counts. Google says each data point is divided by total searches for the geography and time range, and "the resulting numbers are then scaled on a range of 0 to 100." That makes Trends weak for absolute volume and strong for direction and competitor comparison. Set the region to your main market, use a 5-year range to see the real trend, and pick the brand's topic (if one exists) over the plain search term so misspellings are included.

How to measure direct traffic in GA4
Direct traffic is visits with no referring source: people typing your URL, using a bookmark, or tapping a link that carries no referrer. In GA4's default channel group, a session counts as Direct when the source is exactly "(direct)" and the medium is "(not set)" or "(none)".
To track it as an awareness signal:
- Go to Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition, and look at the Direct row.
- Add a comparison for new users only. Returning customers hitting a bookmark tell you about loyalty, not awareness. New users arriving directly are people who learned your name somewhere else.
- Track direct sessions to the homepage separately from deep pages. Deep-page direct traffic is often untagged links from email, apps or messaging, not people typing your URL.
Direct traffic is noisy because anything without a referrer lands there. The fix is to tag every link you control. Use our UTM builder for email, SMS, social bios and influencer links, so the Direct channel is left with genuine type-in and bookmark visits. How to measure share of voice and share of search
Absolute numbers can rise just because your whole category is growing. Share of voice puts your awareness in context: your share of the attention in your market compared with competitors.
Share of search, the free version
Les Binet introduced share of search at the IPA's EffWorks Global event in October 2020. The IPA defines it as "total searches for a specific brand, divided by the total searches for all brands in that category." Binet found it correlated with market share in automotive, energy and mobile handsets and could lead market share by up to a year for cars, while noting it is "not a perfect predictor." To calculate yours:
- In Google Trends, enter your brand and up to four main competitors (Trends compares five terms at once).
- Set your market and a 12-month range.
- Note the average interest for each brand over the period.
- Divide your average by the sum of all five averages. That is your share of search.
- Repeat quarterly and watch the direction.

|---|---|
| Competitor A | 35% |
| Competitor B | 30% |
| Your brand | 20% |
| Competitor C | 15% |

In this illustrative example, your brand's average interest is 20 out of a combined 100, so your share of search is 20%. If that rises to 24% next year while the category stays flat, you are taking awareness from competitors, which is the point of tracking share instead of raw volume.
Share of voice in other channels
The same idea applies to organic rankings (your share of clicks across a set of category keywords), social mentions and press coverage. Keep the competitor set and keyword list fixed from quarter to quarter, or the trend means nothing.
How to track AI mentions of your brand
A growing share of category discovery now happens inside AI answers. In BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey of US adults, 45% said they use ChatGPT or other AI tools for local business recommendations, up from 6% a year earlier. When someone asks an assistant for "the best protein powder for runners" and gets three brand names, being one of them is unaided awareness in its purest form.

To measure it:
- Build a fixed prompt set. Write 20 to 40 questions a shopper in your category would ask, from "best X for Y" to comparison questions that name a competitor.
- Run it on a schedule. Run each prompt several times in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Mode, because answers vary between runs.
- Record three numbers. Mention rate (share of answers that name you), share of AI voice (your mentions divided by all brand mentions) and accuracy (whether what the AI says about you is correct).
- Check your site's readiness. Run key pages through our AEO checker to see whether they're structured to be cited.
Our guides on AI brand monitoring and LLM brand visibility cover the setup, tools and reporting in depth.
What makes AI mention you? Ahrefs' 2025 study of 75,000 brands found that branded web mentions had the strongest correlation with brand mentions in Google's AI Overviews, ahead of links. Branded search volume, the first metric in this guide, also correlated. These are correlations, not proof of cause, but they suggest that awareness and AI visibility feed each other.

How to run a brand awareness survey
Behavioral data shows what aware people do. A survey shows who is aware in the first place, including people who never searched. Run one before and after a major campaign, or twice a year.
| Question type | Example question | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Unaided awareness | "When you think of trail running shoes, which brands come to mind?" | Recall without a prompt |
| Aided awareness | "Which of these brands have you heard of?" (list yours and competitors) | Recognition |
| Ad or content recall | "Have you seen anything from these brands in the past month?" | Whether campaigns are noticed |
| Consideration | "Which of these would you consider buying from next?" | Whether awareness turns into intent |
| Source | "Where did you first hear about [brand]?" | Which channels build awareness |
Where to run it
- Survey panels let you target people in your category who aren't customers yet. Keep the screener, question order and sample size the same every wave.
- Post-purchase surveys on your Shopify thank-you page are cheap and ask buyers how they heard of you. They only reach people already aware, so treat them as a channel signal, not an awareness rate.
- Platform brand lift studies. Google's Brand Lift measures how video ads affect "ad recall, brand association, brand awareness, and consideration" by surveying people who saw your ads against a control group who didn't. Google says it isn't available for all accounts and has a minimum spend, so ask your Google representative.

How to build a monthly brand awareness report
The report should fit on one page and answer one question: is more of our market aware of us than last month and last year? Here's how to build it.
- Set baselines. Pull 12 months of history for each behavioral metric, so you know your normal range and seasonality.
- Fix your definitions. Write down the brand terms, competitor set, prompt list and survey questions, and don't change them without noting it in the report.
- Collect monthly. Branded impressions and clicks (Search Console), direct new users (GA4) and AI mention rate (your prompt set). Our Search Console analyzer speeds up the query pull.
- Collect quarterly. Share of search from Google Trends, plus share of voice on your core category keywords.
- Compare year over year. Month-over-month changes mostly reflect seasonality and campaigns. Year-over-year shows real movement.
- Annotate. Mark launches, PR hits, campaigns and site changes on the timeline, so you can connect cause and effect.
- Tie it to revenue. Put branded search clicks next to revenue from returning and branded-search visitors. Awareness that never shows up in sales is worth questioning.
How to read the signals together
Each metric can move for reasons that have nothing to do with awareness. Reading them together is what makes the measurement trustworthy.
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Branded search up, direct traffic flat | People search for you instead of typing your URL; normal behavior | Count both as awareness; check that branded results are all yours |
| Direct traffic spikes, branded search flat | Untagged email, SMS or app links | Tag links with UTMs and recheck |
| Branded search up, share of search flat | The whole category grew | Report the share, not the raw number |
| Branded search spike for a few days | News, a viral post or a complaint | Check the queries and news before reporting it as growth |
| AI mention rate low despite strong search | Few third-party mentions or thin category content | Earn mentions on sites AI cites; improve comparison and guide pages |
