Yoast SEO for Shopify is a paid Shopify app, priced from $19 a month with a 14-day free trial and no free plan, that adds SEO and readability scoring, one combined structured data graph, bulk metadata editing and an llms.txt file to your store. It is worth installing if your team wants guided on-page optimization and cleaner schema, but Shopify already handles your sitemap, canonical tags, robots.txt and basic product schema without it.
This guide is for Shopify merchants and marketers deciding whether to pay for Yoast, and for teams that already have it and want it set up properly. You'll get the current pricing and review data from the Shopify App Store (checked October 27, 2026), what Shopify does natively, a step-by-step setup, how to avoid duplicate schema, and a decision table for whether the app earns its fee on your store.
What Yoast SEO for Shopify does
Yoast is best known for its WordPress plugin. The Shopify app, listed as "Yoast SEO: Store optimization" and launched on the Shopify App Store on September 27, 2021, brings the same editor-side guidance to products, collections, pages and blog posts. According to the App Store listing and Yoast's help center, it covers five jobs.
1. Content analysis while you edit
Each product, collection, page and article gets a Yoast sidebar. You enter a focus keyphrase, and the app runs an SEO analysis (is the phrase in the title, description, URL and copy?) and a readability analysis (sentence length, paragraph length, transition words). An optional inclusive language analysis flags wording that may exclude readers. These are writing aids, not ranking factors Google uses, so treat a green score as a checklist completed, not a promise.
2. Search and social appearance
Yoast outputs your SEO title, meta description and social sharing tags. You can set templates with variables for each content type, and edit any single item under "Search appearance" and "Social media appearance." Yoast's help center says it disables duplicate meta tags that already exist in your theme, and that if its own fields are empty it falls back to the Shopify SEO title and description you already have.
3. Structured data in one graph
Yoast adds Schema.org markup and, in its own words, puts it "in a single graph." Its developer documentation lists Organization, WebSite and WebPage on every page, a Product piece with offers on product pages (the page type changes to ItemPage), Article on blog posts and BreadcrumbList. On install it attempts to remove existing structured data from your theme templates so the two do not conflict.
4. Bulk editing
The Bulk Editor lets you export your SEO metadata as a CSV, edit titles and descriptions in a spreadsheet, and import them back. Yoast notes that scores do not update until you open each item in the editor.
5. llms.txt and AI visibility tools
Since March 31, 2026, the app can generate an llms.txt file: an opt-in summary of your store for AI tools. The higher AI+ plan adds AI visibility tracking, competitor benchmarking and citation tracking, which we cover below.
Yoast SEO for Shopify pricing and reviews
There is no free version of Yoast on Shopify. As of October 27, 2026, the App Store listing shows two plans, both with a 14-day free trial.
| Plan | Monthly | Yearly | What it adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yoast SEO Premium | $19 | $190 | SEO and readability analysis, automatic structured data, technical SEO improvements, Bulk Editor import and export, 24/7 support |
| Yoast SEO AI+ | $45 | $450 | Everything in Premium, plus scalable technical SEO for products, structured data for search and AI, an AI Visibility Index with sentiment analysis, AI competitor benchmarking, and citation and source tracking |
The yearly price is the better deal if you plan to keep the app. The listing says yearly billing saves 17%, which works out to $38 a year on Premium and $90 a year on AI+.

Read the low ratings before you install. The most recent visible reviews, from August 2026, describe the app changing theme settings or code on live stores. Yoast's replies say the issue was fixed and safeguards were added. That is not a reason to avoid the app, but it is a reason to follow the backup step in the setup below.
What Shopify already does without an app
Many guides imply Shopify needs a plugin for basic SEO. It doesn't. We checked each item below in the Shopify Help Center and, for theme behavior, on Shopify's public Dawn theme demo store on October 27, 2026.
| SEO task | Shopify without an app | What Yoast adds | How we checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Title and meta description | Editable on every product, collection, page and post; Shopify allows 70 characters in the title and suggests 60 or fewer | Templates with variables, a live preview and keyphrase checks | Shopify Help Center |
| XML sitemap | Generated automatically at /sitemap.xml, with child sitemaps for products, collections, blogs and pages | Nothing essential | Shopify Help Center |
| robots.txt | Sensible default that blocks cart, checkout, account and filtered collection URLs; editable through robots.txt.liquid | Nothing essential | Shopify Help Center |
| Canonical tags | Output by the theme; product URLs reached through a collection path canonicalize to /products/ | Nothing essential | Live Dawn demo store |
| Product structured data | Dawn outputs JSON-LD for Product, ProductGroup, Offer, Brand and Organization | One combined graph with WebSite, WebPage, BreadcrumbList and Article | Live Dawn demo store |
| Content guidance | None | SEO, readability and inclusive language analysis | Yoast help center |
| llms.txt | None | Generated weekly from your store data | Yoast announcement, March 31, 2026 |
So the real question is not "does my store need an SEO app to be indexed?" It is "is guided editing, combined schema and bulk metadata work worth $190 to $540 a year for my team?" Your theme matters here: older or heavily customized themes can have thin or broken schema, which is where Yoast helps most. Run a product page through our Schema Markup Validator to see what your theme already outputs before you decide.
We benchmark your store against your top three competitors on Google and AI answers, then list the prioritized SEO fixes and the revenue they could add.
How to set up Yoast SEO for Shopify
Setup takes about half an hour for most stores. Yoast's quick start guide covers the core steps; we have added the safety steps around them.
- Duplicate your live theme. In Online Store, then Themes, choose Duplicate on your published theme. Yoast edits theme files during setup, and a copy gives you a clean fallback.
- Save a snapshot of your current SEO output. Check three URLs (homepage, a top product, a top collection) with our Meta Tag Checker and the Schema Markup Validator, and save the results so you can compare after install.
- Install the app and start the trial. Find Yoast SEO in the Shopify App Store, install it, choose a plan and pin it to your admin sidebar.
- Run the first-time configuration. Approve the Theme integration (the app does not work properly without it), then set Site representation (organization name and logo) and Social profiles (Facebook and X by default, with Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn and Pinterest available).
- Import data from your old SEO app if you had one. Yoast has an SEO data migration flow in Settings. If your titles and descriptions already live in Shopify's own SEO fields, Yoast uses them by default.
- Set Site basics. Choose your site title, title separator and default site image for social shares.
- Connect Site connections. Click Start scan to detect existing verification codes, and add your Google Search Console code if it is missing.
- Review Content types. Check the title and description templates for products, collections, pages and articles. Keep the product name first and the brand last.
- Compare against your snapshot. Recheck the same three URLs. Confirm there is one title tag, one meta description, one canonical tag and one Product entity, and that price and availability still match the page.
- Uninstall old SEO apps. Two apps writing titles or schema is the most common cause of duplicate tags.
Optimizing products and collections with Yoast
The scores are useful only if you aim them at the right pages. Start with the products and collections that already get impressions in Google Search Console, because those are the pages closest to earning more clicks.
Pick one focus keyphrase per page
Use the phrase a shopper actually searches, such as "linen duvet cover queen" rather than your internal product name. Give each collection its own head term and each product a more specific variation, so two pages do not compete for the same query. Our Shopify SEO guide covers keyword mapping across a catalog.
Write titles and descriptions for clicks
Shopify suggests titles of 60 characters or fewer and meta descriptions of about 160 characters. Lead with the product type and key attribute, add a reason to click (free shipping, a size range, a rating), and end with the brand. Preview pixel widths with our Title Tag and Meta Description Checker. Google may still rewrite them, so make the on-page copy match the promise.
Treat readability scores as hints
Readability checks were built for articles. A product page with short spec bullets can score poorly and still convert well. Fix what helps shoppers (a clear first paragraph, scannable benefits, sizing and care details) and ignore warnings that would make the page worse to buy from.
Use the Bulk Editor for catalog-wide fixes
For large catalogs, export the CSV, sort by product type, and rewrite titles and descriptions in batches using one pattern per type. Import, then spot-check a sample of URLs. Remember that scores refresh only when you open each item.
Noindex the pages that should not rank
In a product's Yoast sidebar, the Advanced tab lets you stop search engines showing that item, and content type settings can do the same for whole groups. Use this sparingly, for thin or duplicate pages such as free gift products or wholesale-only items, not for out-of-stock products you will restock.
Avoid duplicate schema on your Shopify theme
Schema is where Yoast can help the most and break the most. Google reads structured data from the page and recommends that it match the visible content. Two conflicting Product entities, or a price in the markup that differs from the price on the page, can make rich results unreliable. The table below covers what we most often see on Shopify stores.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Two Product entities on one page | Theme schema survived next to Yoast's graph, often in a custom section or snippet | Remove the theme block or switch off that schema type in Yoast |
| Review stars missing from rich results | Review app markup not linked to the Product entity | Check the review app's Yoast integration (Judge.me, Loox and Opinew are listed) and validate again |
| Wrong price or currency in markup | Cached or market-specific pricing | Compare markup with the visible price for each market |
| Duplicate title or description tags | A second SEO app or hard-coded theme tags | Uninstall the other app and remove hard-coded tags |
| Custom FAQ or video schema gone | Removed with theme structured data during install | Re-add it in a way Yoast's settings allow, then validate |
After any change, test a product, a collection and an article with the Schema Markup Validator and Google's Rich Results Test. Our guide to product schema on Shopify explains which properties matter for merchant listings.
Our free $100M AI Visibility Roadmap, built from 7,960 live pages and 197 A/B tests, shows how to get cited by ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity.
Does Yoast's llms.txt help with AI search?
Yoast's March 31, 2026 announcement describes llms.txt as a store guide for AI tools. In automatic mode it is built from your best-selling products, up to five large collections, store policies, key pages and recent blog posts, and it updates weekly and drops deleted products. In manual mode you choose what goes in. It is opt-in, under the llms.txt toggle in the app's settings.
Keep expectations realistic. Google's own guidance on AI features says you do not need to create new machine-readable files, AI text files or special markup to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. An llms.txt file costs nothing to enable, but it will not substitute for what gets products cited: clear product facts, consistent structured data, reviews, and pages that answer the questions shoppers ask.
The AI+ plan's visibility index, benchmarking and citation tracking are measurement tools. They tell you where you appear; they do not change your pages. Whether $45 a month is worth it depends on whether you already track AI answers another way.
Is Yoast SEO worth it for your Shopify store?
Use this matrix to decide. It assumes a store on a current Online Store 2.0 theme.
| Your situation | Recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Small catalog, one person writing copy, no SEO experience | Premium is a good fit | The editor checks teach good habits page by page |
| Large catalog with weak or missing titles and descriptions | Premium, used mainly for the Bulk Editor | CSV editing is the fastest route to fixing thousands of pages |
| Old or custom theme with broken or missing schema | Premium, after a schema test | A single clean graph can replace patchy theme markup |
| Modern theme, solid schema, experienced SEO team | Probably skip | Shopify and the theme already cover the essentials |
| Heavy custom schema added by a developer | Test on a duplicate theme first | Install removes theme structured data |
| Want to track AI answers and citations | Compare AI+ with your existing tools | The extra $26 a month buys measurement, not optimization |
The app is a helper, not a strategy. The things that move Shopify rankings and revenue are still choosing the right keywords for each collection, building pages that answer buyer questions, earning links and reviews, and keeping the site technically clean. Our Shopify SEO checklist lists those steps in order.
Your next steps
- Test your current schema and meta tags on three key URLs before you install anything.
- If you install, duplicate your theme first and use the 14-day trial to compare output before and after.
- Point the app at pages that already get impressions, and fix titles and descriptions in bulk.
- Validate schema after every theme or app change.
