What Does ChatGPT Say About Your Brand? 10-Minute Check

A 10-minute check that shows what ChatGPT says about your brand, which competitors it names instead, and which sources shape its answers, plus how to improve them.

Robert Battle · Updated

Key takeaways
  • Run the check in a Temporary Chat with brand, category and comparison prompts, then compare every answer with the facts on your site.
  • ChatGPT answers from training data or live search; only OAI-SearchBot access gets your pages into ChatGPT search answers, while GPTBot affects training.
  • In Ahrefs' September 2026 data, Reddit drew about 16.8% of citations among ChatGPT's top cited domains, so third-party sources shape your answer.
  • Score each answer on presence, position, accuracy, sentiment and sources, and run important prompts more than once.
  • Improve the answer by fixing your own pages, keeping facts consistent and earning mentions on the domains ChatGPT cites, then re-check monthly.

To find out what ChatGPT says about your brand, open a Temporary Chat, ask it the questions a customer would ask about your company, your category and your competitors, and compare each answer with the facts on your website. Ten minutes is enough to spot missing, outdated or wrong information and to see which sources ChatGPT relies on when it talks about you.

This guide is for e-commerce and Shopify teams who want a quick, repeatable check rather than an expensive tool. You will get the timed 10-minute walkthrough, a prompt list you can copy, a scorecard for the answers, a table that maps each problem to its first fix, and a plan for improving what ChatGPT says over the following months.

Why ChatGPT brand mentions matter

ChatGPT is now one of the places shoppers form a first impression. OpenAI has said ChatGPT has more than 900 million weekly active users. Many of them ask it which brand to buy, whether a store is legit or how two products compare, and they get one written answer instead of ten blue links. If that answer names competitors and not you, or quotes an old return policy, you lose trust before the shopper ever reaches your site.

Survey and traffic data show the habit spreading into shopping:

How shoppers use and trust generative AI toolsSurvey of 7,000+ consumers in the US, UK, Germany, France, Australia and Canada, July 2025
55%Trust gen AI tools for at least some thingsall ages
75%Same, ages 18 to 34younger shoppers
41%Used gen AI instead of a search engine to find a productages 18 to 34

  • Adobe Analytics reported that traffic from generative AI tools to US retail sites rose 693.4% year over year during the 2025 holiday season. Adobe notes the base is still modest, but the growth is steep.
  • BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 found that 45% of 1,002 US consumers used AI tools such as ChatGPT as a source for business reviews and recommendations, up from 6% in 2025.

The point is not that ChatGPT has replaced Google. It is that a growing share of first impressions are written by a model, and you should know what it writes about you.

How ChatGPT decides what to say about you

ChatGPT answers come from two places, and your check should cover both because they fail in different ways.

  • Training knowledge. For general questions, ChatGPT may answer from what the model learned in training. That knowledge has a cutoff date, so it can describe an old product line, old prices or a founder who has moved on.
  • Live search. For current or specific questions, ChatGPT searches the web and lists the pages it used under a Sources button. Here the answer depends on which pages ChatGPT can find and crawl, and on what those pages say.

Which crawler matters

OpenAI's crawler documentation separates its bots. OAI-SearchBot surfaces websites in ChatGPT's search features, and OpenAI states that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. GPTBot collects content that may be used to train models, so blocking it affects training, not search. ChatGPT-User visits a page when a user's request triggers it. Our explainer on GPTBot vs OAI-SearchBot goes deeper.

Which sources it cites

When ChatGPT searches, it leans heavily on a small set of large sites. Ahrefs' Brand Radar data for September 2026 shows Reddit alone accounting for about one in six citations among ChatGPT's top cited domains for US queries, with Wikipedia second and Consumer Reports third. For product questions, review publications, retailers and community threads carry a lot of weight.

For your brand this means two things. First, what Reddit and review sites say about you matters as much as what your own site says. Second, your own pages still need to be crawlable and clear, because ChatGPT often checks the brand site for facts such as prices and policies.

Product results

For shopping queries, ChatGPT can show product results with images, prices and merchants. OpenAI's help center describes these results as chosen independently by ChatGPT rather than as ads. Treat the details as a moving target, since OpenAI updates its shopping features often, and check the help center for the current version before you change anything on your store. Our guide to ChatGPT for Shopify covers the store side.

The 10-minute ChatGPT brand check

Set a timer. The goal is not a perfect audit, it is a clear snapshot you can repeat every month.

  1. Minute 0 to 1: set up a clean test. Start a Temporary Chat in ChatGPT. Temporary Chats do not use or create memories, so your own history with the brand will not color the answer. Open a spreadsheet with five columns: prompt, answer summary, named or not, errors, sources.
  2. Minutes 1 to 4: ask about your brand directly. Ask what your brand is and sells, whether it is legit and what customers say, and what your return policy and shipping times are. Check every fact against your site: products, prices, policies, founding story and where you ship.
  3. Minutes 4 to 7: ask category questions. Ask for the best brands in your product type for a specific use or customer, the best option under a price point, and the brands reviewers recommend this year. Add "search the web" to at least one prompt so you can see its sources. This is where most brands discover the gap.
  4. Minutes 7 to 9: ask comparison questions. Ask how you compare with your main competitor for a specific use, and what the downsides of your brand are. Comparisons show how ChatGPT frames you and which weaknesses it repeats.
  5. Minutes 9 to 10: open the sources. For every answer that searched the web, click Sources and list the domains. These are the pages shaping how ChatGPT sees your category. If your site never appears, check that OAI-SearchBot can reach it with our Robots.txt and AI Crawler Tester.

Prompts to copy for your brand check

Swap in your brand, category, competitor and customer. Keep the exact wording in your spreadsheet so next month's check is comparable.

Prompt typeExample promptWhat it reveals
IdentityWhat is [brand] and what does it sell?Whether ChatGPT knows you and describes you correctly
TrustIs [brand] legit? What do customers say about it?Which reviews and complaints it repeats
PoliciesWhat is [brand]'s return policy and how long does shipping take?Outdated or wrong facts that cost sales
CategoryWhat are the best [product type] brands for [customer or use]?Whether you are named and which competitors appear
BudgetWhat is the best [product] under [price]?Whether your price point is understood
Fresh sourcesSearch the web: which [product type] brands do reviewers recommend this year? The domains ChatGPT cites for your category
Comparison[Brand] vs [competitor]: which is better for [use]?How you are positioned against rivals
WeaknessesWhat are the downsides of [brand]?The objections you need to answer on your site

How to score and read the answers

A simple score turns a pile of answers into something you can track. For each prompt, record the following.

ScoreQuestion to answerHow to record it
PresenceIs your brand named?Yes or no, per run
PositionWhere in the list or answer do you appear?1st, 2nd, 3rd or later
AccuracyAre products, prices and policies correct?Count of errors
SentimentIs the description positive, neutral or negative? One word, plus the phrase used
SourcesWhich domains did it cite, and is your site one of them?List of domains

Then look for patterns. Most findings fall into a handful of buckets, each with a clear first fix:

What you findLikely causeFirst fix
You are not named in category answersFew third-party mentions, or your site is not crawlable by OAI-SearchBotAllow OAI-SearchBot, then target the review and comparison sites ChatGPT cites
Wrong prices or policiesOutdated pages, or old facts in training dataUpdate the pages, state each policy in one clear sentence, re-check with "search the web"
Vague or generic descriptionYour site does not state clearly what you sell and who it is forAdd a plain, factual About page and clear category page intros
Repeated complaintsReviews or forum threads that rank wellRespond publicly, fix the underlying issue and earn newer reviews
Competitor confused with youSimilar names or inconsistent brand detailsUse one consistent name, description and Organization schema everywhere

Repeat the check on other AI tools

ChatGPT is a good place to start, but your customers also see Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Copilot. Each uses its own index and sources, so the same brand can be described well in one and missed in another. Once your ChatGPT check is done, run the same category and brand prompts in Google AI Mode and Perplexity. Perplexity shows its sources by default, which makes it a quick way to see which review sites and articles dominate your category.

Keep one spreadsheet with a tab per tool. Over a few months you will see which sources show up everywhere. Those are the highest-value places to earn a mention, because one placement improves several AI answers at once. For a wider view of all these surfaces, read our AI search visibility guide.

How to improve what ChatGPT says about your brand

You cannot edit ChatGPT's answer. You can change what it reads. Work through these in order.

  1. Make your site readable to ChatGPT. Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and make sure key pages render their text without relying on scripts that crawlers may not run. Our guide on how to check if ChatGPT can crawl your website walks through it.
  2. State your facts clearly. Your About, shipping, returns and key product pages should answer the obvious questions in the first sentence or two. That is what ChatGPT quotes.
  3. Keep details consistent. Align your brand name, description and policies across your store, marketplaces, social profiles and any business listings. Add Organization schema and validate it with our Schema Validator.
  4. Answer the objections it repeats. If ChatGPT lists downsides, address each on your product pages or FAQ with honest, specific answers.
  5. Earn mentions on the cited sources. The domains you listed in minutes 9 to 10 are your outreach list: reviewers, gift guides, comparison articles and community threads.
  6. Grow honest reviews. AI answers summarize what customers say. A steady flow of recent reviews gives them better material.
  7. Re-run the check every month. Keep your prompt list fixed so you can see what changed, and check again after launches, price changes or policy updates.

Turn the check into monthly monitoring

Once a one-off check becomes a habit, it turns into AI brand monitoring. The method stays the same: a fixed prompt list, several runs per prompt, the same five scores and a short note on what changed and why. Agencies can roll the numbers into an LLM brand visibility report.

Three habits make the monthly check worth the time:

  • Change one thing at a time. If you update your returns page and earn a roundup mention in the same month, note both, so you can connect improvements to causes.
  • Track competitors too. Record which rivals appear in your category prompts. Their sources are often the fastest path to your own mentions.
  • Share the results. Send the summary to whoever owns PR, customer service and product. Many of the fixes, such as a confusing policy or a recurring defect, are theirs.

Your next step

Block ten minutes this week, run the check and fill in the spreadsheet. You will come away with a short list of facts to fix, sources to target and competitors to watch, which is more than most brands know about their AI first impression.

FAQ

Questions & answers

Why does ChatGPT give different answers about my brand each time?
Answers vary with the exact wording, whether ChatGPT searches the web, the sources it finds and the user's chat history. Run each prompt a few times and look for patterns.
Can I edit what ChatGPT says about my business?
No. You can only improve the sources it reads by fixing your own pages, keeping details consistent and correcting third-party pages that are wrong.
Why is ChatGPT's information about my company outdated?
If it answers without searching, it relies on what the model learned in training, which has a cutoff date. Asking it to search the web usually pulls current information from your site and others.
How often should I check what ChatGPT says about my brand?
Monthly is a good default. Check again after launches, price changes or policy updates.
Does blocking GPTBot hide my brand from ChatGPT?
No. GPTBot is OpenAI's training crawler. ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot, which should stay allowed if you want your pages cited.
