ChatGPT SEO Audit: Prompts, Limits and Free Tools

ChatGPT can't crawl your site, but fed the right exports it's a fast SEO auditor. Here's the workflow, the prompts, the limits, and how to check whether ChatGPT itself can find your store.

Robert Battle · Updated

Key takeaways
  • ChatGPT can't crawl your site or see your rankings, so feed it a crawl export and Search Console data before you ask for an audit.
  • Use ChatGPT to group, explain and prioritize findings, and verify every number it gives you against the original export.
  • In an Ahrefs study of about 3,000 keywords, only 10% of URLs ChatGPT cited ranked in Google's top 10, so audit ChatGPT visibility separately.
  • Only 48% of sites passed all three Core Web Vitals on mobile in the Web Almanac 2025, and ChatGPT can't measure them for you.
  • On Shopify, check collection-path product URLs, thin collection pages, filter URLs, app scripts and robots.txt.liquid edits.

A ChatGPT SEO audit means using ChatGPT to review your pages, data exports and site structure for SEO problems, then turning its findings into a prioritized fix list. It works well for content, on-page and structure reviews when you feed it real data from a crawler and Google Search Console, but it can't crawl your site, see your rankings or measure page speed on its own.

This guide is for Shopify and e-commerce teams who want a fast, low-cost audit without getting generic advice back. You'll get a clear picture of what ChatGPT can and can't check, the data to gather first, a step-by-step audit workflow, copy-and-paste prompts, how to audit your visibility in ChatGPT, the Shopify issues to include, and a way to prioritize what you find.

What a ChatGPT SEO audit can and can't do

ChatGPT is a reviewer, not a crawler. When search is turned on, it can open a public page you point it to, but it reads that page, not your whole site. It has no access to your Google Search Console, analytics, backlink data or real-user speed data unless you export that data and give it to ChatGPT. Everything it tells you depends on what you put in.

That makes the quality of an audit a data problem more than a prompting problem. Here's what each part of a standard audit needs.

Gather this data before you start

Ten minutes of exports will make the difference between a checklist of generic tips and a list of fixes specific to your store.

  • A crawl export. A crawler such as Screaming Frog or Sitebulb gives you every URL with its status code, title, meta description, H1, canonical, word count and inlinks. Our free SEO checker covers the basics for a single page.
  • Search Console performance data. Export queries and pages for the last three months, with clicks, impressions, CTR and average position. Our Search Console analyzer helps you spot pages with high impressions and low clicks.
  • Search Console page indexing report. The list of URLs Google excluded and why, such as duplicates, redirects or "crawled, currently not indexed."
  • Your robots.txt and sitemap. Copy them as plain text.
  • Revenue by landing page. From GA4 or Shopify, so you can rank fixes by money, not just traffic.

Remove customer data and anything confidential before you upload. If your company has rules on what can be shared with AI tools, follow them.

How to run a ChatGPT SEO audit step by step

This workflow keeps the audit focused and makes every finding traceable back to data.

  1. Set the context once. Tell ChatGPT what you sell, your platform (for example Shopify), your main markets, your top competitors and your goal, such as more organic revenue from collection pages.
  2. Upload the crawl export and ask for a technical summary. Ask it to group issues by type (broken links, redirect chains, missing or duplicate titles, missing canonicals, thin pages) and to count how many URLs each affects. Spot-check a few rows yourself.
  3. Add Search Console data. Ask it to join pages with their queries and flag pages with high impressions and low CTR, pages ranking in positions 5 to 20, and queries where two or more of your pages compete. Our keyword cannibalization checker can confirm overlaps.
  4. Review your top pages one at a time. For your 10 to 20 highest-revenue landing pages, paste the content with the queries each page gets and ask whether the page matches the search intent, what questions it leaves unanswered and how to rewrite the title and meta description.
  5. Check indexing and crawl rules. Paste your robots.txt, sitemap and the page indexing report. Ask it to explain each exclusion reason and which ones need action.
  6. Audit AI search visibility. Run your priority buying prompts in ChatGPT and record who is cited (see the section below).
  7. Prioritize. Ask ChatGPT to score every finding by impact and effort using your revenue-by-page data, then review the list yourself before anything goes to a developer.

ChatGPT SEO audit prompts to copy

Specific prompts tied to your data beat broad ones. "How's my SEO?" returns a textbook checklist. These prompts return findings.

Audit taskPrompt
Technical summary"Here's a crawl export for my Shopify store. Group the issues by type, count the URLs affected, and list the 10 most important to fix first, with the reason."
Title and meta review"For each URL, compare the title tag with the top three queries it gets in this Search Console export. Flag titles that don't contain the main query or exceed about 60 characters, and suggest a rewrite."
Striking-distance pages"From this export, list pages with average position between 5 and 20 and more than 500 impressions. For each, suggest what to add to the page to match the query intent."
Search intent check"Here's my collection page and the queries it ranks for. Does the page answer what these searchers want? What questions should I add?"
Internal links"Using this inlinks export, list pages with fewer than three internal links and suggest relevant pages that should link to each one."
Indexing report"Explain each exclusion reason in this page indexing export, say whether it needs action on a Shopify store, and what the fix is."

For quick single-page checks you can also use our free title tag checker and meta tag checker, which pull the live tags directly instead of relying on what you paste.

Audit your visibility in ChatGPT itself

Many people searching for a ChatGPT SEO audit want the other kind: an audit of whether ChatGPT can find, read and recommend their store. This matters because ranking on Google doesn't guarantee a ChatGPT citation. In an Ahrefs study of about 3,000 short-tail keywords (September 2025), only 10% of the URLs ChatGPT cited also ranked in Google's top 10 for the same keyword. Overlap was higher at the domain level: 31.8% of cited domains had a top 10 ranking for that keyword.

In the same study, Perplexity's cited URLs overlapped with Google's top 10 far more often, at 65.07%. Ahrefs notes that the figures come from different-sized datasets and aren't perfectly comparable, but the direction is clear: you need to check ChatGPT separately.

The ChatGPT visibility checklist

  • Crawler access. OpenAI's crawler documentation says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. GPTBot, the training crawler, is controlled separately. Test your rules with our robots.txt tester and see how to check if ChatGPT can crawl your website.
  • Prompt tests. Run 10 to 20 buying prompts for your category, such as "best [product] for [use case] under $[price]", and log whether you're named, which URLs are cited and which competitors appear. Repeat each a few times, because answers vary.
  • Answer-ready pages. Check that key pages answer the main question in the first lines, cover comparisons and include product facts in visible text. Our AEO checker scores this.
  • Structured data. Validate Product, Organization and FAQ markup with our schema validator.
  • Referral tracking. OpenAI's publisher FAQ says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links from ChatGPT search, so you can track those sessions in GA4.

Technical checks ChatGPT can't run for you

Some audit areas need measurement, and ChatGPT can only interpret the results. Core Web Vitals is the clearest example. Google's thresholds for a "good" score are a Largest Contentful Paint of 2.5 seconds or less, Interaction to Next Paint of 200 milliseconds or less, and Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less, measured on real users.

Most sites still miss at least one. The HTTP Archive Web Almanac 2025, based on July 2025 data, found that 48% of sites passed all three Core Web Vitals on mobile and 56% on desktop. On mobile, LCP was the metric most sites failed.

Get your numbers from PageSpeed Insights or the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console, then paste the report into ChatGPT and ask it to explain the main causes and the fixes in plain language. That's a good use of AI: the measurement is real, and ChatGPT does the translation.

The same rule applies to redirects, status codes and sitemaps. Check them with a crawler or our redirect checker and sitemap checker, then use ChatGPT to group and explain the results. For the full list of technical checks, see our technical SEO audit checklist.

Shopify issues to include in your audit

Generic audit prompts miss platform-specific problems. Tell ChatGPT you're on Shopify and ask it to check for these specifically.

  • Duplicate product URLs. Shopify can make a product reachable at both /products/handle and /collections/name/products/handle. Shopify adds a canonical tag pointing to the main product URL, but some themes link internally to the collection version. Check your crawl for internal links to collection-path product URLs.
  • Thin collection pages. Many collections have no description or a single line of boilerplate. These pages often target your most valuable category keywords.
  • Filtered and tagged URLs. Filter and tag parameters can create many near-duplicate collection URLs. Check which ones are indexed in the page indexing report.
  • App scripts and speed. Uninstalled apps can leave code behind, and every app adds requests. Compare your Core Web Vitals before and after app changes.
  • robots.txt edits. Shopify generates a default robots.txt, and you can customize it with a robots.txt.liquid template. Make sure an edit hasn't blocked OAI-SearchBot or important pages.

Our Shopify SEO audit guide covers each of these in more depth.

How to prioritize what the audit finds

An audit that produces 200 findings and no order is not useful. Sort every issue by revenue impact and effort, and work top to bottom.

PriorityTypical findingsWhy
1. Fix nowKey pages blocked by robots.txt or noindex, OAI-SearchBot blocked, broken top landing pagesNothing else matters if pages can't be crawled or indexed
2. Quick winsTitles and metas on high-impression, low-CTR pages; striking-distance pages in positions 5 to 20Small edits on pages that already have demand
3. Content gapsThin collection pages, unanswered buyer questions, missing comparisonsWins Google rankings and AI citations at the same time
4. Structural fixesInternal linking, duplicate URL paths, faceted URLsLarger lift that compounds over months
5. PerformanceCore Web Vitals failures, heavy apps and imagesOften needs developer time; prioritize templates that drive revenue

When to move beyond a DIY audit

A ChatGPT-assisted audit is a good fit for a smaller catalog with a team that can make the fixes. It reaches its limits when your store has thousands of URLs, when traffic dropped and you don't know why, or when the findings conflict and nobody can say which fix matters most. That's when a full technical SEO review with crawl, indexing and revenue data pays for itself.

FAQ

Questions & answers

Can ChatGPT do a full SEO audit?
Not on its own. It can't crawl your site, see Search Console or measure page speed. It becomes a useful auditor when you give it a crawl export, Search Console data and your page content, then verify its findings.
Is there a free ChatGPT SEO audit tool?
ChatGPT's free plan can review pages and exports you provide, and free tools like a site crawler's limited version, Search Console and PageSpeed Insights supply the data. Our free SEO checker, AEO checker and robots.txt tester cover the basics for single pages.
What prompts work best for an SEO audit?
Prompts that include your data and a specific task, such as comparing each title tag with the queries the page gets in Search Console. Broad prompts like asking how your SEO is return generic checklists.
How do I audit whether ChatGPT can find my site?
Confirm OAI-SearchBot is allowed in robots.txt, run your main buying prompts in ChatGPT and log who is cited, check that key pages answer questions directly, and track utm_source=chatgpt.com sessions in GA4.
How often should I run a ChatGPT SEO audit?
Quarterly works for most stores, plus after a site migration, theme change or traffic drop. Use the same exports and prompts each time so you can compare results.
