SEO for CBD companies is the practice of earning organic Google and AI search visibility for hemp-derived CBD products in a category where paid search is mostly closed. Google Ads only allows ads for topical, hemp-derived CBD with 0.3% THC or less, from approved advertisers, targeting California, Colorado and Puerto Rico, so for most CBD brands and most product types, organic search is the main scalable way to be found when someone searches for what you sell.
This guide is for CBD and hemp brands, most of them on Shopify, that want a plan they can run without tripping ad policies or FDA rules. You'll get what Google's ad and Shopping policies actually say today, how FDA rules shape the words on your pages, a keyword and page plan built from current search volumes, the technical setup for age gates and lab reports, and a 90-day plan.
Why SEO matters more for CBD companies
In most e-commerce categories, SEO competes with paid search for budget. In CBD, it mostly replaces it. A supplement brand can buy its way onto page one tomorrow. A CBD gummy brand can't run Google Search or Shopping ads for that product at all, so the only way onto the results page is to rank.
That changes the economics in three ways:
- There is no paid backstop. If a product page drops from position 3 to position 12, you can't cover the gap with ads while you fix it. Rankings are the revenue line.
- Competitors can't outspend you on Google either. The category is decided by who has the more useful, more trustworthy site, which rewards brands that invest early and consistently.
- Organic gains compound. A page that ranks for "cbd cream" keeps earning without a per-click cost, and the authority it builds helps every new product page you launch.
The catch is that CBD is a health-adjacent topic. Pages that make medical claims create legal risk and trust problems at the same time, which is why compliance and SEO have to be planned together, not by separate teams.

What Google Ads and Merchant Center allow for CBD
Here is what Google's policy pages say as of October 27, 2026, when we checked them.
Google's Dangerous products or services policy, under "Recreational drugs," says ads for topical, hemp-derived CBD products with THC content of 0.3% or less are allowed, that advertisers must apply, and that they may only target California, Colorado and Puerto Rico. It adds that some ad formats carry extra restrictions. Google's December 2022 change log entry explains the details: the update took effect on January 20, 2023, ads for other CBD products such as supplements, food additives and inhalants stayed disallowed, YouTube Masthead isn't eligible, and in the US only topical products certified by LegitScript can be promoted, after which the advertiser also needs Google certification. LegitScript certification requires product samples for THC testing and a third-party Certificate of Analysis, and LegitScript charges a fee.
Shopping is stricter on paper. Google's Shopping ads policies list "recreational drugs (chemical or herbal)" and "psychoactive substances" as examples of dangerous products, and restrict "unapproved pharmaceuticals and supplements." That page does not name a CBD exception, so assume your CBD products won't serve in Shopping ads or free listings unless Google tells you otherwise in Merchant Center.
| Channel | What CBD brands can do | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search ads | Topical, hemp-derived CBD at 0.3% THC or less, LegitScript and Google certified, targeting California, Colorado and Puerto Rico only | Google Ads Dangerous products or services policy |
| Google ads for CBD gummies, oils, tinctures, vapes | Not allowed (supplements, food additives and inhalants remain disallowed) | Google Ads change log, December 2022 |
| Google Shopping ads and listings | No CBD exception named; recreational and psychoactive substances and unapproved supplements are restricted | Google Shopping ads policies |
| Organic Google Search | Open to any lawful page that meets Google's spam policies and search quality standards | Google Search Central |
| AI answers (Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity) | No ad slot to buy; visibility comes from being a cited, trusted source | Platform documentation |
FDA rules that shape your CBD content
The words on your product pages and blog posts are where most CBD brands get into trouble, and FDA's position is clear. On its page FDA Regulation of Cannabis and Cannabis-Derived Products, Including Cannabidiol (CBD) (content current as of July 16, 2024), FDA says:
- Only one CBD drug is approved. Epidiolex, a prescription drug for seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, Dravet syndrome and tuberous sclerosis complex. FDA says there are no other FDA-approved drug products that contain CBD.
- Claims make a product a drug. Under the FD&C Act, a product intended for a therapeutic or medical use is a drug, and FDA notes it has sent several warning letters to firms marketing CBD to treat diseases.
- CBD can't be sold as a dietary supplement, and FDA says it is prohibited to sell food with added CBD in interstate commerce.
- Hemp status isn't a free pass. Even if a product meets the 2018 Farm Bill definition of hemp, FDA says it still must comply with the FD&C Act, and legality depends on intended use, labeling and marketing.
In January 2023 FDA also concluded that its existing frameworks for foods and supplements are not appropriate for CBD and said it would work with Congress on a new approach.
Write for search intent without making claims
People search "cbd for sleep" and "cbd for pain." You can still serve that intent with honest, educational content, as long as you don't promise outcomes. The table shows the pattern. Have your attorney approve the rules, then apply them to every template.
| Risky copy | Why it's a problem | Safer approach |
|---|---|---|
| "Our CBD oil treats anxiety" | A disease claim makes the product an unapproved drug under FDA's reading | Explain what CBD is, what research is ongoing, and link to the primary sources |
| "Clinically proven pain relief" | Implies approval and evidence the product doesn't have | Describe the product: format, strength in mg, ingredients and how to use it |
| "CBD dietary supplement" | FDA says CBD products are excluded from the dietary supplement definition | Use plain product terms such as "CBD gummies" or "hemp extract gummies" |
| Customer reviews promising cures | Reviews you publish on your own site become part of your marketing | Moderate reviews for disease claims before they go live |
| "Lab tested" with no proof | An unsupported claim that weakens trust | Link the batch Certificate of Analysis from every product page |
The 2026 hemp definition change
Federal rules are moving. According to a Congressional Research Service report updated September 28, 2026, the FY2026 agriculture appropriations law (P.L. 119-37) narrows the statutory definition of hemp. Final hemp-derived cannabinoid products with more than 0.4 milligrams of total THC and similar cannabinoids per container fall outside the new definition. Exclusions for certain synthetic cannabinoids take effect November 12, 2026, and a continuing resolution (P.L. 119-103) delayed the other portions to December 11, 2026. CRS also notes that FDA had not yet published the required list of cannabinoids. Talk to counsel about your catalog now, and plan to update or retire pages for products that change.

A CBD keyword and page plan
CBD demand is large and spread across product, education and local searches. The chart shows US monthly search volume for a sample of CBD queries, pulled from Ahrefs Keywords Explorer on October 27, 2026.

Three patterns stand out. Product terms like "cbd gummies" have the biggest volume and the hardest competition. Education terms like "what is cbd" and "cbd vs thc" draw large audiences with lower difficulty scores, which makes them good authority builders. Long-tail product terms such as "cbd gummies for sleep" and "cbd cream" carry clear buying intent at lower difficulty, so they are often the fastest wins.
| Keyword cluster | Example queries (US volume) | Page to build | Compliance note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core product types | cbd gummies (85,000), cbd oil (36,000), cbd cream (13,000) | Collection pages with buying guidance, filters by strength and spectrum | Describe the product, not outcomes |
| Education | what is cbd (33,000), cbd vs thc (22,000) | Pillar guides with cited primary sources | Link FDA and research sources directly |
| Use-case searches | cbd for sleep (7,100), cbd gummies for sleep (4,700) | Product guides that explain formats, dosing labels and what research says | Highest claim risk; have counsel review |
| Pet | cbd oil for dogs (5,100) | Pet collection page and an owner's guide | FDA regulates animal products too |
| Questions and objections | does cbd show up on a drug test (3,800), full spectrum vs broad spectrum cbd (400) | FAQ-style articles answering in the first two sentences | Be precise about THC content per product |
| Local | cbd near me (28,000) | Store locator and location pages, only if you have retail partners or stores | Check state rules for each location |

Technical SEO for CBD stores
CBD sites have a few technical problems most stores don't. Fix these before you publish more content.
Age gates that don't block Google
Many CBD stores show an age gate. Google's interstitial guidance treats legally required interstitials as exempt, but recommends overlaying the gate on the page rather than redirecting to a separate page, because redirecting every URL to one consent page removes all but that page from search results. For content behind a mandatory adult age gate, Google recommends letting Googlebot crawl the content without triggering the gate.
Lab reports as crawlable pages
Certificates of Analysis are your strongest trust signal, yet most stores bury them in a PDF folder. Link the current batch report from each product page, label it with the batch number and date, and add a lab results hub that lists every product. Shoppers use it, and it gives AI assistants a clear source when they're asked whether a brand tests its products.
Structured data and product details
- Add Product schema with price, availability and reviews so listings can earn rich results. Test it with our schema validator.
- Show CBD mg per serving, total mg, spectrum type and THC content in text, not only in images.
- Use unique descriptions per product variant. Thin, copied descriptions across 20 SKUs are a common reason CBD collections stall.
Payment and platform stability
CBD brands sometimes change payment processors, platforms or domains on short notice. Any migration needs a full redirect map and a crawl before and after launch, or years of rankings can disappear in a week.
Content that builds trust with Google and buyers
Google's search quality rater guidelines treat health topics as "Your Money or Your Life," where trust carries the most weight. For CBD, trust is visible on the page. Our guide to E-E-A-T covers the framework; this is how it applies to CBD.
- Named experts. Put a real author and, for health-adjacent guides, a qualified reviewer on the page, with a short bio.
- Primary sources. Cite FDA, the Congressional Research Service and peer-reviewed research directly, not other CBD blogs.
- Transparency pages. Sourcing, extraction method, testing lab, shipping restrictions by state and a clear returns policy.
- Honest comparisons. Full spectrum versus broad spectrum versus isolate, with THC content stated plainly.
- Freshness. Date every regulatory article and update it when the rules change. The hemp definition change above will make many older CBD articles wrong.
Link building and AI search for CBD brands
Many sites won't link to CBD brands, and paid link schemes violate Google's spam policies. The links worth earning come from being genuinely useful:
- Original data. Publish your own lab-testing summaries or customer survey results, with the method stated.
- Industry and trade coverage. Hemp trade publications, state hemp associations and retail partners.
- Expert commentary. Your formulator or compliance lead answering journalist questions about the changing rules.
- Retailer and wholesale partners. Where-to-buy pages from stores that carry your products.
AI search matters even more in a category without ads. When someone asks ChatGPT or Google AI Mode which CBD brands test their products, the answer cites pages it can read and trust. Clear answers in the first sentences of a page, visible lab data, consistent brand facts across your site and third-party mentions all help. Run a page through our AEO checker to see how readable it is for answer engines.

A 90-day SEO plan for CBD companies
- Weeks 1 and 2: compliance pass. With counsel, set your claim rules and audit every product page, collection, blog post and review widget against them. Remove or rewrite disease claims first.
- Weeks 2 and 3: technical audit. Confirm the age gate overlays content and doesn't redirect, check indexation in Google Search Console, fix broken redirects and add Product schema.
- Weeks 3 and 4: keyword map. Assign one primary keyword to each collection, product and guide using the clusters above. Merge or redirect pages that compete.
- Month 2: collection and product pages. Rewrite your top collections with buying guidance, filters and linked lab reports. These pages carry the transactional queries.
- Month 2: lab results hub. Publish a crawlable hub listing every product's current Certificate of Analysis.
- Month 3: education pillars. Publish two or three pillar guides (what CBD is, spectrum types, how to read a lab report), each linking to the matching collection.
- Month 3: authority. Pitch one piece of original data or expert commentary to trade outlets and partners.
- Every month: measure. Track rankings, organic revenue and AI citations, then review the hemp rules and update dated pages.
Where to start this month
If you do one thing this month, run the compliance pass on your top ten organic landing pages. They carry most of your traffic and most of your risk. Then fix the age gate and lab report setup so Google and AI assistants can read what makes your brand trustworthy.
