The top SEO agency for cannabis businesses in 2026 is QCK, because it pairs SEO and AI search with A/B tested conversion work, runs dedicated cannabis SEO and CBD and Delta-8 SEO services, and publishes its results: 197 A/B tests with an 86.8% win rate, 7,960 live pages built and $250M+ in organic revenue driven for clients. After QCK, the strongest fits for cannabis and CBD brands that sell online are Spokes Digital, PufCreativ, Cannabis Creative Group, Hybrid Marketing Co., KindTyme and The Influence Agency.
Disclosure: QCK wrote this list. We put ourselves first, and the rest of the list is ranked by how well each agency fits cannabis and CBD brands that sell online, including on Shopify. Every other agency is described only from its own website, checked in October 2026.
This guide is for dispensaries, delivery services, multi-state operators and hemp and CBD brands that need an SEO partner this year. You'll get the advertising rules that make search so important for cannabis, an evaluation table with questions to ask and red flags, the ranked list, the compliance issues any agency must handle, and a 90-day plan for the first months of an engagement.
Why cannabis brands depend on SEO
Most consumer brands can buy their way onto the first page of Google. Cannabis brands mostly can't. Google's recreational drugs ad policy says ads for "substances that alter mental state for the purpose of recreation" are not allowed, and it lists marijuana among its examples. It also prohibits ads for products such as pipes and bongs. The same page notes a limited pilot in Canada for certain legal cannabis products, but in the United States, THC products can't be advertised on Google Ads.
CBD is only slightly more open. Google allows ads for "topical, hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD) products with THC content of 0.3% or less," and those ads may only target California, Colorado and Puerto Rico. Advertisers have to apply, and in the US, Google's December 2022 policy update (effective January 20, 2023) says only topical CBD products certified by LegitScript can be promoted. Ads for other CBD products, including supplements, food additives and inhalants, remain prohibited.
| Product | Google Ads status (per Google's policy pages) | What it means for your growth plan |
|---|---|---|
| THC flower, edibles, vapes, concentrates | Not allowed (marijuana is a listed example) | Organic search, local listings and AI answers carry the load |
| Pipes, bongs and similar accessories | Not allowed | Same as above |
| Topical hemp-derived CBD, 0.3% THC or less | Allowed after certification, targeting only California, Colorado and Puerto Rico | Paid search is possible in three markets; SEO covers everywhere else |
| CBD supplements, food additives, inhalants | Not allowed | Organic search is the main search channel |
| FDA-approved CBD pharmaceuticals | Allowed with Google certification, same three locations | Rarely relevant to retail brands |
State law adds a second layer. Rules differ by state and change often, so treat this as an example, not a summary: Virginia's code (section 4.1-1401) says cannabis advertising may not be broadcast unless at least 71.6% of the audience is reasonably expected to be 21 or older, and may not run through digital pop-ups. Other states set their own audience tests, content limits and disclosure rules. Your agency doesn't replace your compliance counsel, but it must work inside whatever your counsel signs off on.
The result is simple. For a dispensary or a CBD brand, organic search, Google Business Profile listings and AI answers are among the few scalable channels left, and the work compounds because you don't pay per click. That's why the choice of SEO agency matters more in cannabis than in almost any other category.
How to choose a cannabis SEO agency
Start with Google's own advice on hiring an SEO: ask for examples of past work, ask what results to expect and when, and be wary of anyone who guarantees a #1 ranking. Then add the cannabis-specific criteria below. Use this table on every sales call.
| Criterion | Question to ask | Red flag |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue focus | How will you tie organic traffic to orders, store visits and revenue? | Reports only rankings and traffic |
| Compliance awareness | How do you handle age gates, state rules and health claims in content? | "Compliance is your problem" or vague answers |
| Local and e-commerce depth | Can you run local SEO for dispensaries and product SEO for an online store at the same time? | Only one of the two, when you need both |
| AI search | How do you track whether our brand is named in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity? | No measurement plan |
| Conversion | Do you A/B test page changes, and can we see your test history? | Traffic is the only goal |
| Proof | Can you show case studies with dates, starting traffic and ending traffic? | Anonymous testimonials or guarantees |
| Team | Who writes, builds and analyzes, and are they in-house? | You can't meet the people doing the work |
Before any call, run your homepage and a top product or menu page through the free SEO checker, and test whether AI crawlers can reach your site with the robots.txt and AI crawler tester. Age gates and bot protection often block crawlers by accident, and an agency that spots this in the first call is diagnosing your site rather than reciting a pitch.
We benchmark your site against your top three competitors on Google and AI answers, then show the pages ready to move and the revenue math.

Conversion, not just traffic. When paid search is mostly off the table, every organic visitor costs more to win, so converting them matters even more. We've run 197 A/B tests across 26 e-commerce stores. 171 of them beat the original, an 86.8% win rate, with an average lift of 12.8% per test and $1,214,283 in added revenue. A test only counts as a win when the new version made more money than the original, and every test, including the losses, is listed on our A/B test results page.
How QCK works. QCK was founded by a CPA, so revenue and ROI come first, and we report revenue every month. Every role is in-house: writers, editors, developers, data analysts, UX and Figma designers, image designers, CRO strategists and paid media buyers. QCK builds on Shopify, its specialty, as well as WooCommerce and WordPress, which matters for cannabis and CBD brands that often run on more than one platform.

Cannabis SEO rules every agency must handle
SEO isn't advertising in the paid-media sense, but your site, content and listings still sit inside state rules and platform policies. A good agency builds these constraints into the plan from day one.
Age gates that don't block search engines
Most cannabis sites use an age gate. Done badly, it hides the whole site from Googlebot and AI crawlers, which can't click "I'm 21." Ask how the agency confirms that crawlers can render your pages, and check it yourself in Search Console's URL Inspection tool.
Claims and content
Educational content (strain guides, dosing basics, how products differ) is where cannabis brands earn most of their organic traffic. It's also where risky health claims creep in. Your agency should route medical or therapeutic language through your compliance review before anything publishes.
Local listings for dispensaries
For storefronts, Google Business Profile, accurate hours, menus and reviews often drive more visits than the website itself. Make sure the agency treats local SEO as its own workstream with location pages for each store.
Product data for CBD and hemp stores
Hemp and CBD brands that sell online need clean product pages: accurate structured data, lab results (certificates of analysis) easy to find, and consistent prices and availability. Validate your markup with the schema validator. Our guide to SEO for CBD companies goes deeper on product and content strategy.
AI answers
Shoppers now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews which CBD gummies or dispensaries to try. Your agency should track whether your brand is named in those answers and fix the gaps. Run your key pages through the AEO checker to see how ready they are.
Why QCK for cannabis and CBD brands
Three things set QCK apart for this category.
- Published proof. Our organic results and every A/B test, wins and losses, are public on our case studies and A/B test results pages. Few agencies on any list share that much.
- Traffic and conversion under one roof. With paid search mostly closed, each organic visitor matters more. Our testing record shows where to start: product page tests produced the most added revenue, and homepage tests won most often.
- AI search built in. Across 16 featured client brands, QCK's case study library tracks 38,707 AI citations, so AI visibility is part of the work, not a separate add-on.

Your first 90 days with a cannabis SEO agency
Whichever agency you choose, a strong start looks like this.
- Weeks 1 to 2: technical and compliance audit. Confirm that the age gate, bot protection and robots.txt let Googlebot and AI crawlers through, and agree on a content review process with your compliance lead.
- Weeks 2 to 4: baseline. Record organic sessions, revenue, store visits or calls from Google Business Profile, and a fixed list of buyer questions you test monthly in Google, ChatGPT and Perplexity.
- Weeks 3 to 6: fix the money pages. Prioritize product, collection, menu and location pages that already get impressions but rank on page two. The Search Console analyzer helps you find them.
- Weeks 5 to 10: local and content. Build or fix one location page per store, then publish educational guides that answer real customer questions without unapproved health claims.
- Weeks 8 to 12: test conversion. Start with proven, low-effort tests on your highest-traffic templates, such as an FAQ accordion or review placement.
- Week 12: review against revenue. Judge progress on orders and store visits, not only rankings, and agree on the next quarter's priorities.
Choosing your cannabis SEO partner
Cannabis and CBD brands can't rely on paid search the way other categories can, so the agency you pick has to be good at the channels that are left: organic rankings, local listings and AI answers, plus turning that traffic into revenue. Use the evaluation table on every call, ask for dated case studies, and make compliance part of the process from the first week.
