TikTok SEO: How to Rank in TikTok Search and Google

TikTok SEO is optimizing videos and your profile so shoppers find you when they search on TikTok and on Google. Here's what TikTok says drives results, how to find keywords and a checklist for every video.

Robert Battle · Updated

Key takeaways
  • TikTok SEO means planning each video around one search phrase and putting it in the caption, on-screen text and spoken audio.
  • TikTok names captions, sounds and hashtags as video signals and says follower count is not a direct recommendation factor.
  • Pew found 20% of US adults regularly got news on TikTok in 2026, double the 10% in 2022, and 39% of adults under 30.
  • In TikTok's own 2025 study with WARC, 86% of US Gen Z internet users searched on TikTok weekly, and many also used Google in the same journey.
  • Measure search views after the first week and tagged sessions in GA4, then turn proven TikTok topics into pages that rank on Google.

TikTok SEO is optimizing your videos and profile so they show up when people search on TikTok, and increasingly when they search on Google too. It works like any search optimization: find the words your customers type, put those words in your captions, on-screen text and spoken audio, and make videos that answer the search better than anything else in the results.

This guide is for e-commerce and Shopify brands that already post on TikTok, or plan to, and want those videos to keep getting found long after the first 48 hours. You'll get the latest data on TikTok as a search tool, what TikTok says it uses to rank content, a keyword research method, a step-by-step video checklist, profile fixes, how to get TikTok content into Google and how to measure all of it.

What is TikTok SEO?

TikTok SEO is the practice of making TikTok content discoverable through search instead of relying only on the For You feed. A video built for the feed is designed to stop the scroll. A video built for search is designed to answer a specific question, such as "best running shoes for flat feet" or "how to clean a cast iron pan," for someone who typed it in.

The two are not opposites. A good search video still needs a strong hook. The difference is that a search video is planned around a keyword and keeps earning views as long as people keep searching that phrase, while a feed video tends to peak and fade.

Why it matters for e-commerce brands

Shopping questions are search questions. "Is this worth it," "dupe for," "how to style," "review" and "vs" searches are all moments where a shopper is close to buying. If your product appears in those results, demonstrated by your brand or by creators, you are present at the point of decision, not just at the point of entertainment.

Is TikTok really a search engine?

For a large share of younger shoppers, yes. TikTok says its community conducts billions of searches every day, with total searches up 40% year over year, in a September 2025 TikTok for Business post. In the same post, TikTok reports results from its Global Future of Search Study 2025 (US results), conducted with WARC: 86% of Gen Z internet users search on TikTok weekly.

That study, commissioned by TikTok, also shows that search on TikTok sits alongside Google rather than replacing it. Among people who use TikTok to search, 38% start on a traditional search engine before turning to TikTok, and 34% start on TikTok before switching to a traditional search engine.

Independent data points the same way. Pew Research Center tracks how many Americans regularly get news on TikTok, one measurable kind of information seeking. That share went from 10% of US adults in 2022 to 20% in 2025 and held at 20% in Pew's August 2026 survey. Among adults under 30 it was 39% in 2026.

Pew also found in 2025 that 37% of US adults use TikTok, including 63% of adults under 30. In a 2024 Pew and Knight Foundation study, 62% of adult TikTok users said product reviews or recommendations were a reason they use the app. That is the opening for e-commerce brands.

TikTok has not published a ranking formula for search, and anyone who claims to know the exact weights is guessing. What TikTok has said publicly gives you enough to work with.

In its explainer on how TikTok recommends videos, TikTok names three groups of signals: user interactions (videos you like or share, accounts you follow, comments and content you create), video information (captions, sounds and hashtags) and device and account settings such as language and country, which it says get lower weight. It also says that neither follower count nor a history of high-performing videos is a direct factor in recommendations.

TikTok's help center describes search results in similar terms: what you have searched and interacted with, how well a video matches the search, its hashtags and sound, and your device, language and location settings. Viewers can also sort and filter results and turn off personalized search.

For a brand, that translates into three levers you control:

  • Relevance. Make it obvious what the video is about: the keyword in the caption, on screen and said out loud.
  • Engagement from searchers. Answer the search quickly and completely so people watch, save and share instead of bouncing to the next result.
  • Consistency. Cover a topic repeatedly so your account becomes a clear match for that set of searches.

TikTok keyword research for e-commerce

Start from what shoppers already type. You do not need a paid tool to begin.

Where to find keywords

  • TikTok's search bar. Type your product category and note the autocomplete suggestions. Do the same with modifiers like "best," "how to," "vs," "review" and "dupe."
  • Related searches on results pages. TikTok shows suggested and related searches on many results pages. Each one is a content idea.
  • Comments on your videos and competitors' videos. Questions in comments are searches that have not been typed yet.
  • TikTok's own analytics. TikTok offers creators search insights inside the app, and TikTok Creative Center shows trending hashtags and topics.
  • Your Google Search Console data. Queries that already bring shoppers to your product and collection pages are proven demand. Many of them work as TikTok searches too.

Sort keywords by buying stage

For a skincare brand, for example, the same product can be found through very different searches. Map each keyword to the video that fits it.

Search typeExample keywordVideo that wins
Problem"sunscreen for oily skin"Texture test on oily skin with a clear verdict
Comparison"mineral vs chemical sunscreen"Side by side, with who each one suits
Product"[your brand] sunscreen review"Creator or customer review, plus a founder reply
How to"how to reapply sunscreen over makeup"Step-by-step demo using your product
Gift and occasion"skincare gifts for her"Bundle unboxing with prices on screen

Prioritize keywords where the current top results are weak: old, vague, or not actually answering the question. Those are the easiest results to beat.

Use this checklist on every video you want to be found through search.

  1. Pick one target keyword before you film. One video, one search. "Best hiking boots for wide feet" is a better target than "hiking."
  2. Say the keyword in the first few seconds. "If you have wide feet and need hiking boots, here are the three I'd buy." It confirms to the viewer they found the right answer.
  3. Put the keyword on screen. Add it as a text overlay at the start so it is visible even with the sound off.
  4. Turn on captions. TikTok's auto captions turn what you say into on-screen text, which helps viewers watching without sound.
  5. Write a descriptive caption. Lead with the keyword phrase in plain language, then add context: who it's for, what you tested, the product name.
  6. Add a few specific hashtags. TikTok names hashtags as a signal. Use ones that describe the topic and product, not generic tags.
  7. Answer fast, then show proof. Give the answer early, then demonstrate it: fit, texture, before and after, the product in use.
  8. Prompt a useful action. Ask viewers to save the video for later or comment with their own question. Each question is a new keyword.
  9. Reply to comments with videos. A video reply to "does this work on curly hair?" is a search-targeted video with a built-in audience.

How to optimize your TikTok profile

Your profile is the landing page for anyone who likes a video and wants more. It also helps people searching for your brand find the right account.

  • Name and username. Use your brand name so branded searches find you. If space allows, add your category in the display name, such as "Example Co | Running Shoes."
  • Bio. Say what you sell and who it's for in plain words, plus one reason to follow.
  • Link. Point the profile link to a collection or landing page, not just your home page, and tag it with UTM parameters so you can see TikTok traffic in GA4. The free UTM builder makes this quick.
  • Playlists and pinned videos. Group videos by product or problem, and pin the ones that answer your most-searched questions.
  • Consistent topics. An account that covers one set of topics well is easier to match to those searches than one that posts about everything.

How to get TikTok videos ranking on Google

Public TikTok videos have their own URLs, and Google can show them in its results, often for "how to," "review" and product searches. The same habits that help on TikTok help here: a descriptive caption that states the topic in plain language gives Google text to understand the video.

The bigger opportunity for a store is to bring the best TikTok content onto pages you own:

  • Embed top videos on product pages. A demo or review video next to the product answers the same questions on the page where people buy.
  • Build guide pages around TikTok-proven topics. If "how to style wide-leg jeans" drives saves and comments on TikTok, it deserves a guide on your site that can rank on Google.
  • Host your own copy of key videos. Upload important videos to your site or YouTube with VideoObject structured data, so Google can index them as your content. Our video SEO guide covers the setup.
  • Use TikTok comments as FAQ research. Repeated questions belong in your product page FAQs and collection copy.

This also feeds AI search. Answer engines draw on pages that clearly answer questions, so turning TikTok questions into well-structured pages on your site helps you show up in Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT as well. See our AI search optimization service if that is a priority.

TikTok search ads and TikTok Shop

Organic search and paid search on TikTok can work together. TikTok's Search Ads Campaign places keyword-based ads in search results and, according to TikTok, uses familiar mechanics: keyword targeting, match types, negative keywords and search term reports. In the same post, TikTok reports that across a meta-analysis of US and Canada campaigns from July 2024 to June 2025, activations that included dedicated search campaigns drove 2.0x higher purchase lift than those without.

The search term reports are useful even if your main focus is organic: they show the exact phrases shoppers use, which you can turn into organic videos and website content.

On commerce, TikTok's WARC study found that 1 in 5 TikTok search users have made a direct purchase through a brand's site or TikTok Shop after finding something by searching on TikTok. If you sell through TikTok Shop, the same keyword work applies to how you name and describe products. If you don't, your profile link and website pages need to carry the search intent through to checkout.

How to measure TikTok SEO

Views alone will not tell you whether search is working. Track whether search is a growing source of views and whether that attention reaches your store.

MetricWhere to find itWhat it tells you
Views from searchTikTok video analytics, traffic sourcesWhether the video is being found by search, not just the feed
Views after the first weekTikTok video analyticsSearch videos keep earning views; feed videos usually fade
Saves and sharesTikTok video analyticsWhether the answer was useful enough to keep or send
Profile link clicks and sessionsTikTok analytics and GA4 with UTM tagsWhether TikTok attention turns into store visits
Revenue from TikTok sessionsGA4 or Shopify reportsWhether those visits buy
Branded search on GoogleGoogle Search ConsoleWhether TikTok exposure sends people to search for your brand

Review search videos monthly. Videos that keep earning search views are your proven topics: make follow-ups, embed them on product pages and turn them into website content.

Your first 30 days of TikTok SEO

Week one, list 20 searches from TikTok's search bar, your comments and your Search Console data, sorted by buying stage. Week two, film five search-targeted videos using the checklist above and fix your profile name, bio and tagged link. Weeks three and four, publish, reply to comments with videos and check which videos earn search views after the first week.

Then connect it to your site: put the best videos on product pages and turn the most-asked questions into pages that can rank on Google. If you want help building search visibility across Google, AI answers and the platforms your customers use, get in touch.

FAQ

Questions & answers

What is TikTok SEO?
TikTok SEO is optimizing your videos and profile so they appear when people search on TikTok. It means targeting a specific search phrase and using it in your caption, on-screen text, spoken audio and hashtags, then answering the search well enough that viewers engage.
Do hashtags still matter for TikTok SEO?
Yes, but as one signal among several. TikTok names captions, sounds and hashtags as video information it uses. A few specific, descriptive hashtags help more than a long list of generic ones.
Does follower count affect TikTok search rankings?
TikTok says neither follower count nor a history of high-performing videos is a direct factor in its recommendation system. Accounts with more followers may still get more views, simply because more people see their videos.
Can TikTok videos rank on Google?
Yes. Public TikTok videos have their own URLs and can appear in Google results. For your store, the bigger win is embedding your best videos on product pages and turning popular TikTok questions into guide pages you own.
How long does TikTok SEO take to work?
TikTok publishes no timeline. Give a batch of search-targeted videos a few weeks, then judge them on views from search and whether they keep earning views after the first week.
