Citations for SEO are mentions of your business on other websites. In local SEO, a citation is a listing of your name, address and phone number (NAP) on directories like Yelp or Apple Maps. In AI search, a citation is a link to a source that ChatGPT, Perplexity or a Google AI Overview shows next to its answer. Both work the same way: the more consistent, credible places that mention your brand, the more likely search engines and AI models are to trust it and recommend it.
This guide is for e-commerce and Shopify brands (and stores with a physical location) that want to show up when shoppers ask AI tools for recommendations. You'll get the three types of citations that matter now, what the latest research says about how AI picks its sources, where an online store should be listed, a step-by-step citation audit and a plan to earn the mentions that AI answers draw on.
What are citations in SEO?
A citation is any place on the web that names your business. For most of SEO's history, the word meant one thing: a local listing with your NAP details. Today it covers three related ideas, and you need all three in mind to make good decisions.
| Type | What it is | Examples | Who it matters most for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Structured citation | A business listing with set fields: name, address, phone, website, hours, category | Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, Yelp, BBB, industry directories | Stores with a showroom, warehouse pickup or service area; any brand that wants a clean entity record |
| Unstructured citation | A mention of your brand inside an article, list, review or forum post | "Best of" roundups, gift guides, product reviews, Reddit threads, podcasts, local news | Every e-commerce brand; these are the mentions AI answers lean on |
| AI citation | A source link an AI tool shows as evidence for its answer | Links under a Google AI Overview, ChatGPT search sources, Perplexity footnotes | Brands that want to be recommended or quoted in AI answers |
The link between them is simple. Structured citations tell machines your basic facts. Unstructured citations tell them what people say about you. AI citations are the visible result: the pages an AI tool trusted enough to quote. If your brand appears in those cited pages, you get recommended. If it doesn't, a competitor does.
Citations versus backlinks
A backlink is a hyperlink to your site. A citation does not need a link at all. A gift guide that names your brand without linking to it is still a citation, and as you'll see below, those plain mentions now carry more weight in AI answers than raw link counts. Our guide to unlinked brand mentions shows how to find them and, where it makes sense, turn them into links.
Why citations matter more in AI search
For about a decade, local citations were a fading tactic. Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey of local search experts (published November 2025) found citations lost about half a percentage point of importance for local pack rankings, continuing a long decline. The same report says AI search is reversing that trend: three of the top five factors for AI search visibility are citation factors. Darren Shaw, who runs the survey, sums it up as "mentions (citations) are the new link."
Independent data points the same way. In May 2025, Ahrefs compared 75,000 brands against how often Google AI Overviews mentioned them. The strongest correlation by a wide margin was branded web mentions, ahead of branded anchor text, branded search volume and every link metric.

Two cautions. First, these are correlations, not proof that mentions cause AI visibility; well-known brands earn both. Second, the gap is still striking: brands in the top quarter for web mentions averaged 169 AI Overview mentions, more than 10 times the 14 averaged by the next quarter, while the bottom half averaged 0 to 3. Backlinks still matter for rankings, but if your goal is to be named in AI answers, being talked about on the right pages is the bigger lever.
AI answers reduce clicks, so being named matters
Pew Research Center tracked 900 US adults' Google searches in March 2025. When an AI summary appeared, people clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, compared with 15% when there was no summary, and clicked a link inside the summary only about 1% of the time. If shoppers read the answer and stop, the brands named in that answer win the consideration, even without a click.

How AI tools choose which sources to cite
Each AI tool picks sources differently, but they share a pattern: they run searches, read the pages that come back and cite the ones that best support the answer. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use "query fan-out," issuing several related searches across subtopics to build one response. That means your brand can be cited from a page that ranks for a related question, not just the one the shopper typed.
Ahrefs' March 2026 study of 863,000 keyword results and about 4 million AI Overview URLs found that only 37.9% of cited pages ranked in the top 10 for the same query. The rest came from positions 11 to 100 or from pages outside the top 100 entirely. In Ahrefs' earlier July 2025 analysis, that top 10 share was about 76%.

For a store, the takeaway is that ranking first for your head term is not the only route in. Pages that answer the follow-up questions shoppers ask ("is X safe for kids", "X vs Y", "best X under $50") and third-party pages that review your category are all candidates for citation.
Which sites get cited most
Profound analyzed 680 million AI citations from August 2024 to June 2025. Community and reference sites led: Wikipedia was the most cited domain in ChatGPT (7.8% of all citations), and Reddit led in both Google AI Overviews (2.2%) and Perplexity (6.6%). Review and comparison sites like G2, NerdWallet, Yelp and TripAdvisor also made the top 10 on at least one platform. The lesson for e-commerce brands is to be present and accurately described on the community, review and editorial sites in your category, because that is where AI tools look.

Do e-commerce brands need local citations?
If you sell only online, you don't need hundreds of local directory listings. You do need a small set of accurate core listings, for two reasons. First, they build a clean entity record: Google, Apple, Bing and AI models cross-check your name, website, logo and contact details across sources. Second, wrong data spreads. One expert in Whitespark's report warns that if your details are wrong on your website or prominent sites like Facebook, BBB or Yelp, Google may automatically update your Google Business Profile with the wrong information.
If you have a showroom, retail store, pickup point or service area, local citations matter directly. Google says local results are based on relevance, distance and prominence, and that prominence is based partly on how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have.
| Platform | Why it matters | Priority for online-only brands | Priority with a physical location |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | Feeds Google Maps, the local pack and Google's knowledge of your brand | Medium (only if eligible) | High |
| Apple Business Connect | Feeds Apple Maps, Siri and Spotlight | Low | High |
| Bing Places | Feeds Bing Maps and Microsoft's local results | Low | High |
| Trustpilot, BBB and category review sites | Review pages are common AI sources for "is this brand legit" questions | High | High |
| Industry directories and marketplaces | Category-specific listings that AI tools cite for "best X" answers | High | High |
| Social profiles (Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn) | Confirm your brand entity and give AI tools more context | High | High |
Google Business Profile has eligibility rules: online-only businesses generally can't create a profile with a physical address customers can't visit. Check Google's current guidelines before you set one up, and never list a fake address to get on the map.
How to run a citation audit
Before you build anything new, fix what already exists. Inconsistent data is the most common citation problem, and it is the cheapest to solve.
- Write your canonical record. Pick one exact version of your brand name, address (if any), phone, website URL, logo, short description and category. Store it in a shared doc so every listing uses the same text.
- Search your brand the way a shopper would. Search your brand name, your brand plus "reviews," your brand plus "vs" and your top product names. Note every directory, review site and article that appears on the first two pages.
- Ask the AI tools directly. In ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Mode, ask "What is [brand]?", "Is [brand] legit?" and "What are the best [category] brands?" Record which sources they cite. Our walkthrough on checking your ChatGPT brand mentions has prompts you can copy.
- Fix wrong or outdated details. Correct old addresses, phone numbers, discontinued product names and dead URLs, starting with the sources AI tools cited in step 3.
- Merge or remove duplicates. Duplicate listings split reviews and confuse both search engines and AI models about which record is correct.
- Complete every field. Fill in categories, descriptions, hours, photos and links on the listings that matter. Put a clear one-sentence description of what you sell at the start of each description field.
- Mark up your own site. Add Organization schema with your logo, contact details and
sameAslinks to your official profiles. Our schema markup generator builds the code, and the Organization schema guide explains each field. - Re-check every quarter. Listings drift as staff change, apps sync and directories scrape old data. Put a recurring review on the calendar.
Common citation problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| AI tools describe products you no longer sell | Old reviews, roundups or directory descriptions | Update your listings and ask editors of cited articles to refresh product details |
| ChatGPT or Perplexity gives the wrong website or phone number | Inconsistent NAP data across directories | Correct the cited sources first, then the long tail |
| Competitors are named in "best X" answers and you aren't | You're missing from the roundups and review sites AI tools cite | Pitch those pages and build presence on the cited domains |
| AI answers say little or nothing about your brand | Few third-party mentions and thin About and product pages | Strengthen your own pages and earn editorial mentions |
| Google Business Profile changes on its own | Google pulled conflicting data from other sites | Make your website and top listings match your canonical record |

How to earn the citations AI answers use
Clean listings are the floor. The mentions that actually get you recommended are unstructured: articles, reviews and discussions that name your brand in context. Here is where to focus.
Get on the "best of" lists for your category
Whitespark's 2026 report advises getting listed on expert-curated "best of" lists, and several experts in the survey say these lists are regularly cited as grounding sources for AI answers. Find them by asking AI tools for the best products in your category and noting which articles they cite. Then contact the editors with a product sample, clear specs and anything that makes your product a good fit for a specific use case.
Be present where shoppers talk
Reddit, YouTube and niche forums show up repeatedly as AI sources. You can't buy your way into authentic discussion, but you can help: answer questions honestly from an official account, send products to reviewers who cover your category and make it easy for happy customers to share their experience. Avoid fake reviews and planted posts. They break platform rules and, under the FTC's rule on fake reviews, can lead to penalties in the US.
Collect reviews beyond Google
Reviews on independent sites are citations too. Ask customers to review you on Trustpilot or the review sites that matter in your category, not just on your product pages. Our Google reviews guide covers how to ask without breaking the rules.
Make your own pages worth citing
AI tools cite pages that answer questions clearly. Give your product and collection pages specific facts (materials, sizing, compatibility, care), add an FAQ section that answers real pre-purchase questions and publish comparison and buying guides for the questions shoppers ask before they buy. Google's guidance is that pages need to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet to appear in AI features, and that no special schema or AI file is required. Run your key pages through our AEO checker to see how answer-ready they are.
How to track your citations
Citation work is slow, so measure it on a fixed schedule rather than day to day.
| What to track | How | How often |
|---|---|---|
| Listing accuracy | Compare your top 20 listings against your canonical record | Quarterly |
| AI mentions and sources | Run the same set of 10 to 20 prompts in each AI tool and log brand mentions and cited URLs | Monthly |
| New editorial mentions | Set up brand alerts and check referring pages in your SEO tool | Monthly |
| AI referral traffic | In GA4, look at sessions from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and similar referrers | Monthly |
| Branded search demand | Track branded queries in Google Search Console | Monthly |
Use the same prompts each month so changes reflect your work, not different wording. AI answers vary between runs, so look for trends over several months instead of reacting to a single result. Our guide to AI brand monitoring covers tools and a simple tracking sheet.
Your citation plan for the next 90 days
Month one: write your canonical record, audit your top listings and the sources AI tools cite for your brand, and fix every error. Month two: complete your core profiles, add Organization schema and strengthen your About, product and FAQ content. Month three: build a list of the "best of" articles, review sites and communities AI tools cite in your category, and start outreach. Then re-run your prompt set and compare.
Citations won't move overnight, but they compound. Every accurate listing and every credible mention adds one more source that tells search engines and AI tools the same story about your brand.
