The future of SEO is search that answers first and links second. Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity now write the answer and cite a handful of sources, so organic strategy is shifting from "rank and get the click" to "be the trusted source the answer is built from," while the fundamentals of crawlable, helpful, authoritative pages still decide who gets picked.
This guide is for e-commerce and Shopify teams deciding where to put next year's SEO budget. You'll get the current data on AI search adoption and click loss, what stays the same, the six shifts that change how you work, what it means for product and collection pages, a step-by-step plan, and a measurement framework for a world with fewer clicks.
Where is SEO heading in 2026?
Three things are true at once. First, AI answers are now a default part of search, not an experiment. Second, those answers send fewer clicks to websites than a classic list of ten blue links. Third, the systems choosing sources for those answers still rely on the same signals SEO has always worked on.
Google says this plainly. Its guide to optimizing for generative AI features (last updated July 10, 2026) states that "optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO." It also tells site owners to prioritize effective SEO over "AEO/GEO hacks," and lists chunking content, AI text files and inauthentic mentions among the tactics to ignore.
So the future of the SEO industry is not a replacement discipline. It is SEO with a wider surface area (more platforms, more crawlers), a different success metric (being cited and named, not only ranked) and a harder measurement problem. The agencies and in-house teams that win are the ones that keep the foundations strong and adapt their goals and reporting.
The short version
- What is shrinking: clicks on informational queries where an AI answer appears.
- What is growing: the number of places a buyer can discover your brand, including AI Mode, Gemini, ChatGPT, Perplexity and agentic shopping surfaces.
- What still decides the winner: indexable pages, clear answers, accurate product data, real expertise and a brand other sites talk about.
How many people use AI search now?
Adoption is no longer the open question. Alphabet said in its June 2026 investor presentation that AI Overviews "now have over 2.5 billion users each month." On its July 2026 earnings call, it said AI Mode had passed 1 billion monthly active users and the Gemini app had 950 million.

Outside Google, chatbot use keeps climbing. Pew Research Center found that 44% of U.S. adults said they use ChatGPT in its February 2026 survey, up from 18% in 2023. Pew notes that the 2026 question also asked about other chatbots, so the last step is not a perfect like-for-like comparison.

For retailers, the more useful signal is traffic. Adobe reported on January 7, 2026 that traffic from generative AI tools to U.S. retail sites rose 693.4% during the 2025 holiday season (November 1 to December 31) compared with the year before. Growth that steep usually starts from a small base, so check your own analytics before assuming AI referrals are a big share of sessions. The direction, though, is clear.
How AI Overviews change clicks and CTR
The cost of AI answers shows up in click-through rate. Three independent datasets point the same way.
- Pew Research Center (July 2025). Tracking the browsing of 900 U.S. adults in March 2025, Pew found users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits to a results page with an AI summary, versus 15% without one. They clicked a link inside the summary on just 1% of visits, and ended their browsing session 26% of the time versus 16%.
- Ahrefs (February 2026). Across 300,000 keywords, average desktop click-through rate for the number one result on keywords with an AI Overview fell from 7.3% in December 2023 to 1.6% in December 2025. On informational keywords without an AI Overview it fell from 7.6% to 3.9%. Ahrefs estimates position one gets about 58% fewer clicks than it would have without AI Overviews.
- Seer Interactive (November 2025). Across 3,119 informational queries from 42 client organizations, organic CTR on queries with AI Overviews fell from 1.76% in June 2024 to 0.61% in September 2025.

Two details matter for planning. Clicks fell even on keywords without AI Overviews, which suggests wider behavior change, not just one feature. And being cited helps: Seer found brands cited in the AI Overview earned about 35% more organic clicks than those not cited, though Seer cautions that brand strength may explain both.

For a store, this hits top-of-funnel content hardest: "what is," "how to" and "best way to" articles. Commercial and branded queries with clear purchase intent still send clicks, and product pages are less exposed. What stays the same in SEO
Most of the job does not change, and that is good news for brands that already invested in it. The table below sorts the work into what holds, what shifts and what is new.
| Area | Still true | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Crawling and indexing | Pages must be crawlable, indexable and fast | More crawlers to manage: OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot alongside Googlebot |
| Content | Helpful, original, expert content wins | The answer must be explicit and easy to quote, not buried in paragraph six |
| Structured data | Product, Offer, Review and Organization markup still earn rich results | Accurate product data feeds AI shopping and agentic checkout surfaces too |
| Links and authority | Links and mentions from trusted sites build authority | Unlinked brand mentions in reviews, press and forums matter more for being named |
| Keywords | Search demand research still sets priorities | Longer, conversational prompts and fan-out sub-questions widen what you must answer |
| Reporting | Organic revenue is the number that matters | Impressions, citations and brand mentions become leading indicators as clicks fall |
Google is explicit that no special markup is needed. Its guide says "there's no special schema.org markup you need to add" for AI features, and that Google Search does not use llms.txt files. If a vendor sells either as the key to AI visibility, that is a red flag. Our post on whether you need llms.txt covers the details.
Six shifts that will shape the future of SEO
1. From rankings to citations
The new visibility unit is a citation or a mention inside an answer. A page in position four can be cited above position one if it answers the question more directly. Track both.
2. From one search engine to many surfaces
Google is still the largest source of organic demand, but buyers also ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot. Each has its own crawler and its own way of choosing sources, so access and visibility must be checked platform by platform.
3. From keywords to questions and fan-out
Google describes query fan-out as a set of related queries its model runs at the same time to gather results. In practice, one prompt like "best running shoes for flat feet under $150" becomes several searches about support, sizing, price and reviews. Pages that answer those sub-questions clearly get more chances to be used. Google also warns that creating pages mainly to target fan-out queries can violate its scaled content abuse policy, so this is about completeness, not volume.
4. From traffic to brand demand
If a shopper reads your name in an AI answer and later searches for you directly, the original search gets no credit in your analytics. Branded search volume and direct traffic become part of the SEO story.
5. From pages to product data
AI shopping answers lean on structured product information: price, availability, variants, reviews and policies. Clean feeds and accurate on-page data now affect visibility, not only rich results.
6. From blue links to agentic shopping
Shopping is moving into the answer. Shopify's agentic storefronts let merchants "discover and purchase your products in AI channels," with direct checkout available in Google AI Mode, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot, while ChatGPT works mainly as a discovery referrer that sends shoppers to your store to check out. Shopify says these storefronts are active by default for eligible stores, and orders show channel or referrer attribution in the admin.
What the future of SEO means for Shopify stores
E-commerce has an advantage here: products have hard facts (price, materials, sizes, ratings, shipping times) that AI systems need and that most content sites lack. The work is making those facts easy to find, trust and quote.
| Page type | Exposure to AI answers | What to do now |
|---|---|---|
| Blog and how-to guides | High: informational queries trigger AI answers most | Lead with the answer, add original data or expertise, link to the products that solve the problem |
| Collection pages | Medium: "best X for Y" prompts pull category context | Add a short buying guide and FAQ that answers comparison questions in plain text |
| Product pages | Medium: AI shopping answers use specs, price and reviews | Put key specs, policies and review summaries in the HTML; keep Product and Offer schema accurate |
| Homepage and About | Low for clicks, high for entity clarity | State who you are, what you sell and who for, consistent with your Google Business Profile and social bios |
| Comparison and alternatives pages | High: AI tools often answer "X vs Y" prompts | Write honest comparisons with a table and clear verdicts by use case |

How to future-proof your SEO strategy
Here is the order we would work in for an e-commerce brand starting today.
- Audit crawler access. Check robots.txt, your CDN and any bot protection for Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot. Decide separately whether to allow training crawlers such as GPTBot and ClaudeBot. Our robots.txt and AI crawler tester shows how each bot is treated.
- Fix technical foundations. Make sure key content renders in the HTML, pages are indexable, canonicals are clean and Core Web Vitals pass. AI features draw on the same index.
- Build your question list. Collect 30 to 50 real buyer questions from Search Console queries, site search, support tickets and reviews. Group them by product line and stage.
- Rewrite your top pages answer first. Put a two to three sentence answer at the top of each guide and a plain-text summary on each collection. Use our AEO checker to review structure.
- Clean up product data. Validate Product, Offer and Review markup with our schema validator, and keep Merchant Center and Shopify catalog data consistent with the page.
- Add what only you can say. Original photos, test results, sizing data, founder or expert input and customer evidence. This is the content AI answers cannot copy from elsewhere.
- Earn mentions off your site. Reviews, gift guides, niche publications, partnerships and genuine community participation. Avoid paid or fake mentions, which Google lists as a hack to ignore.
- Set a baseline and track monthly. Record how often you are cited or named for your question list on each platform, then repeat on a fixed schedule.
Steps one, two and five are usually the fastest wins, because a blocked crawler or broken product data can keep you out of answers no matter how good the content is.
How to measure SEO when clicks shrink
If you judge SEO only on sessions, the future will look worse than it is. Add leading indicators that show whether you are winning visibility before it turns into clicks and revenue.
| Metric | Where to find it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Organic revenue and orders | GA4 and Shopify analytics | Still the outcome that pays for SEO |
| Impressions and CTR by page | Search Console Performance report | Shows demand and where AI answers cut clicks |
| AI feature impressions | Search Console generative AI reports, rolling out from June 2026 | First Google data dedicated to AI Overviews and AI Mode visibility |
| AI referral sessions | GA4 referrals such as chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai | Direct measure of traffic from AI tools |
| Citation and mention rate | Repeated prompt sampling across platforms | Shows share of voice in answers, since answers vary run to run |
| Branded search volume | Search Console queries containing your brand | Captures demand created by mentions that never clicked |
Google also says clicks from results pages with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality, meaning visitors are more likely to spend time on the site. That is Google's own claim, so test it in your data by comparing conversion rate for organic landing pages before and after AI Overviews appeared on their queries.
Look at trends over months, not single checks. AI answers change with wording, location and time, so one screenshot proves little. A fixed prompt list sampled on a schedule is the honest way to report.
Where to start this quarter
