What Is Ahrefs? Tools, Metrics and Pricing (2026)

Ahrefs is a paid SEO platform for backlink, keyword and competitor research. Here's what each tool does, how far to trust its metrics, and what it costs today.

Robert Battle · Updated

Key takeaways
  • Ahrefs is an SEO suite with its own web crawler, so it shows backlinks, keywords and traffic estimates for any site, not just yours.
  • Domain Rating and URL Rating are Ahrefs' own link-strength scores on a 0 to 100 scale; Google does not use them.
  • In Ahrefs' own 2022 study of 1,635 sites, traffic estimates had a median deviation of 49.52% from Search Console, so use them to compare, not to report.
  • As of October 27, 2026, Ahrefs lists Lite at $129, Standard at $249, Advanced at $449 and Enterprise at $1,499 a month, plus a $29 Starter plan.
  • Ahrefs Free gives you Site Audit, Site Explorer and Web Analytics for sites you verify, which covers most single-store audits.

Ahrefs is a paid SEO platform that crawls the web to show you who links to any site, which keywords it ranks for and roughly how much search traffic it gets. Marketers use it for competitor research, keyword research, backlink analysis, site audits and rank tracking, and as of October 27, 2026, paid plans start at $129 a month for Lite, with a $29 Starter plan and a free tier for sites you own.

This guide is for e-commerce and Shopify teams deciding whether Ahrefs is worth paying for, or trying to make sense of the numbers an agency sends them. You'll get a plain explanation of each main tool, what Domain Rating, URL Rating and traffic estimates really measure (and where they mislead), the current plans and prices, a step-by-step first session, and how to turn the data into decisions that make money.

What is Ahrefs and what is it used for?

Ahrefs started as a backlink checker and grew into an all-in-one search marketing suite. It runs its own crawler and keeps its own indexes of pages, links and keywords, so you can look up any domain, not just your own. That is the key difference from Google Search Console, which only shows data for sites you have verified.

According to Ahrefs' own index page (ahrefs.com/big-data, checked October 27, 2026), it reports 494 billion pages in its index, 35 trillion external backlink history records, 110 billion keywords ever seen and 16 years of historical data, and says it crawls 5 million pages every minute. Those are the company's own figures, but they explain why people treat Ahrefs as a reference database for the web's link graph.

What people actually use it for

  • Competitor research. See which pages bring a rival the most search traffic and which sites link to them.
  • Keyword research. Find what shoppers type into Google, with search volume and a difficulty estimate.
  • Link analysis. Audit your own backlinks, find broken links worth reclaiming and spot link prospects.
  • Technical checks. Crawl your store for broken pages, redirect chains, missing titles and similar issues.
  • Tracking. Monitor rankings and, more recently, how often your brand shows up in AI answers.

If you are comparing it with other suites, our guides to the best Ahrefs alternatives and Semrush alternatives cover the trade-offs.

Ahrefs tools explained: the main features

Ahrefs groups its products into search marketing, website performance, content marketing, reporting and local SEO. You don't need all of them. Most e-commerce teams live in four or five.

Site ExplorerShows any domain's backlinks, organic keywords, top pages and traffic estimatesFind the category and product pages that win traffic for a competitor

Brand RadarTracks how visible a brand is in AI chatbots and answersSee whether ChatGPT and Google AI answers mention you or a rival
Web Analytics and GSC InsightsFirst-party traffic analytics and Search Console data inside AhrefsCompare estimates with your real clicks

Site Explorer

Site Explorer is where most sessions start. Enter a domain or URL and you get its Domain Rating, referring domains, backlinks, organic keywords and estimated organic traffic, plus history charts. The Top pages report is the most useful for stores: it shows which URLs earn a competitor's search traffic, so you can see whether their wins come from collections, product pages or blog content.

Keywords Explorer

Keywords Explorer gives you volume, Keyword Difficulty, related terms, questions and the current top-ranking pages for a query. Use it to group terms into one page per intent, rather than writing a page for every variation.

Site Audit

Site Audit crawls your site the way a search engine would and groups issues by type. On Shopify, it is good at surfacing duplicate URLs created by collection filters, long redirect chains after URL changes and orphan pages nothing links to. You can cross-check single issues with our free redirect checker and internal link checker.

Rank Tracker and Brand Radar

Rank Tracker monitors a fixed list of keywords. Brand Radar and Custom Prompts are Ahrefs' answer to AI search: they track how often a brand appears in large language model answers. Brand Radar AI is priced separately from the core plans, which we cover below.

Ahrefs metrics: DR, UR and traffic estimates

Ahrefs' metrics are useful shorthand, but every one of them is Ahrefs' own model, not a Google number. Google does not use Domain Rating or URL Rating. Read them as relative scores for comparing sites, not as facts about your store.

MetricWhat it measuresGood forMain limit
Domain Rating (DR)Strength of a whole site's backlink profile, 0 to 100, relative to other sites in Ahrefs' indexQuickly comparing link strength between you and competitorsSays nothing about traffic, relevance or sales
URL Rating (UR)Strength of one page's link profile, 0 to 100, counting internal and external linksJudging which pages carry the most link equityA model of PageRank, not Google's actual value
Organic trafficEstimated monthly clicks from Google, built from rankings, volume and CTRComparing competitors and spotting trendsCan be far off for any single site
Keyword Difficulty (KD)How hard it is to reach the top 10 for a keyword, based on the links of ranking pagesShortlisting keywords you can realistically winIgnores content quality and brand strength
Referring domainsCount of unique websites linking to a site or pageTracking link growth over timeCounts junk domains as well as good ones

Domain Rating (DR)

Ahrefs' help center defines DR as the strength of a website's backlink profile compared with the others in its database, on a 100-point scale. It is calculated iteratively: a linking domain's own rating is divided among all the sites it links to, so a link from a strong site that links out sparingly passes more value than one from a site that links to thousands. Ahrefs itself says DR correlates with rankings, but not as well as URL Rating. Our full guide to what Domain Rating is covers how to read it and why chasing a higher DR is rarely the right goal.

URL Rating (UR)

UR is the page-level version. Ahrefs says it follows the same basic principles as Google's original PageRank: it counts links between pages, respects nofollow and applies a damping factor. Both internal and external links count, and the scale is logarithmic, so moving from 70 to 80 takes far more than moving from 10 to 20. When you check a bare domain in Site Explorer, the UR you see belongs to the homepage.

Organic traffic estimates and their limits

Ahrefs estimates a site's traffic in three steps: it finds every keyword the site ranks for, estimates clicks for each from its position, monthly search volume and an average click-through rate for that position, then adds them up. Its help center is direct about the caveat: treat the numbers as estimations, because not every variable in the formula can be accurate.

The best public test is Ahrefs' own. In May 2022, Ahrefs compared monthly U.S. traffic estimates with Google Search Console data for 1,635 random websites. The median deviation was 49.52%, and the correlation with Search Console was 0.76. The author noted that some sites were within 5% while others were off by more than 1,000%.

The practical rule follows from that: use estimates to compare sites and spot direction, and use your own Search Console and analytics for your own store. Estimates also count only Google organic clicks, so they will never match Shopify or GA4 sessions, which include direct, email, paid and social visits.

Which plan fits an e-commerce brand?

Start with Ahrefs Free if you only need to audit your own store and see your own backlinks. A single-store brand doing its own competitor and keyword research can usually work within Lite, provided one person uses it and the 1,000-credit limit and 6-month history are enough. Standard makes sense once several people need it, you track more than 750 keywords, or you want two years of history to compare seasons. Advanced and Enterprise are mostly for agencies and large catalogs.

How to use Ahrefs: a first session

A focused first hour beats clicking through every report. Here is a sequence that gives a Shopify store something to act on.

  1. Verify your store. Connect Google Search Console so Ahrefs can show your real clicks next to its estimates.
  2. Run Site Audit. Sort issues by the number of affected URLs and fix errors on indexable pages first, such as broken internal links and redirect chains.
  3. Open Site Explorer for your top three competitors. In Top pages, note which page types (collections, products, guides) bring them the most traffic.
  4. Run a content gap. Compare your keywords with those competitors to find terms they rank for and you don't. Filter for commercial terms.
  5. Check Keyword Difficulty and the live results. For each shortlisted term, look at who ranks today. If the top results are product collections, build or improve a collection page, not a blog post.
  6. Review your backlinks. Look at new and lost referring domains, and reclaim links pointing to pages that now return 404 errors.
  7. Add your money keywords to Rank Tracker. Track the terms tied to your best-selling collections and products, not vanity terms.
  8. Write down three actions. One technical fix, one page to improve and one page to build. Then measure the result in Search Console, not in Ahrefs estimates.

Our free Search Console analyzer helps with that last step, since it works from your actual click data.

Rankings are half the picture. Get cited by AI too.

Ahrefs pros and cons for online stores

Where Ahrefs is strong

  • Link data. Backlinks are where Ahrefs began, and its link index is one of the largest available.
  • Competitor visibility. You can see what works for any store in your niche, not just your own.
  • Clear interface. Reports are consistent, and most can be filtered and exported.
  • A real free tier. Ahrefs Free covers audits and backlink data for your own verified sites.

Where it falls short

  • Cost adds up. Extra users, Brand Radar and add-ons are priced on top of the base plan.
  • Estimates are estimates. Traffic, volume and difficulty are models, and Ahrefs' own study shows large errors for some sites.
  • No revenue view. Ahrefs can tell you a page gets traffic. It cannot tell you whether that traffic buys.
  • Credit limits on Lite. Heavy research can run into the 1,000-credit cap.

Turning Ahrefs data into revenue

Ahrefs answers "where could we get traffic?" It doesn't answer "which traffic will make money?" That second question is where most stores stall: they collect keyword lists and DR scores, then ship pages that rank but don't sell.

To close that gap, connect each Ahrefs finding to a revenue number. A keyword is only worth chasing if the page it lands on converts. A link is only worth building if it points at a page that matters commercially. And a ranking gain only counts when Search Console clicks and store revenue move with it.

A simple prioritization filter

  • Commercial intent. Does the current top 10 show product or collection pages? If yes, the keyword can drive sales directly.
  • Existing assets. Do you already have a page that ranks on page two? Improving it is usually faster than building a new one.
  • Conversion path. Does the landing page convert today? If not, fix the page before you send more traffic to it.

This is the work QCK does for e-commerce brands. QCK was founded by a CPA, so revenue and ROI come first, and it reports revenue to clients every month. Its in-house team of writers, editors, developers, data analysts, designers and CRO strategists has built 7,960 live pages for clients and driven more than $250M in organic revenue.

If you want the same kind of analysis for your store, our e-commerce SEO services start from your competitors' data and end with the pages most likely to add revenue.

Is Ahrefs worth it for your store?

Ahrefs is worth paying for if someone on your team will use it every week for competitor research, keyword planning and link analysis. It is not worth it as a dashboard you open once a month to check your DR. In that case, Ahrefs Free plus Search Console covers most of what you need.

Whichever way you go, keep the numbers in their place. DR and UR are link-strength models, traffic figures are estimates, and only your own analytics shows what earns money. Use Ahrefs to find opportunities, your Search Console data to confirm them, and revenue to decide which ones matter. If you would like a second opinion on where your store's search revenue is hiding, get in touch.

FAQ

Questions & answers

Is Ahrefs free?
Ahrefs Free (formerly Ahrefs Webmaster Tools) is free for sites you verify and includes Site Audit, Site Explorer and Web Analytics. Researching other sites in depth needs a paid plan, which starts with the $29 Starter plan or $129 a month for Lite as of October 27, 2026.
What is a good Domain Rating?
There is no universal good DR, because it is relative to other sites in Ahrefs' index. Compare your DR with the stores that rank for your target keywords, and focus on links from relevant sites rather than the score itself.
How accurate is Ahrefs traffic?
It is an estimate built from rankings, search volume and average click-through rates. In Ahrefs' own 2022 study of 1,635 sites, the median deviation from Search Console was 49.52%, so use it to compare sites and trends, and use Search Console for your own store.
Does Google use Ahrefs DR?
No. DR and UR are Ahrefs' own metrics. Ahrefs says they correlate with rankings, but Google does not use either one.
Is Ahrefs better than Semrush?
Both are full SEO suites with different strengths, and the right choice depends on what you research most and your budget. Our guides to Ahrefs and Semrush alternatives compare the options side by side.
