Tools Like Semrush: The Best Picks by SEO Job (2026)

The best Semrush alternatives sorted by the job you need done, with plan prices, keyword limits and AI prompt tracking taken from each vendor's pricing page in October 2026.

Robert Battle · Updated

Key takeaways
  • Ahrefs, SE Ranking and Moz Pro are the closest all-in-one alternatives to Semrush, at $129, $129 and $99 a month for their entry SEO plans on monthly billing.
  • SE Ranking Core tracks 2,000 keywords daily for $129 a month, four times the 500 daily keywords on Semrush's $139 SEO plan.
  • Ahrefs lists weekly rank tracker updates on its Lite, Standard and Advanced plans, while Semrush, SE Ranking and AccuRanker update daily.
  • AI prompt tracking is counted differently by each vendor (daily prompts, weekly prompts or monthly checks), so compare units, not headline numbers.
  • Set up Google Search Console and a free Screaming Frog crawl first, then buy the one suite that matches the job you do every week.

The best tools like Semrush are Ahrefs, SE Ranking and Moz Pro if you want one all-in-one platform, plus specialists such as AccuRanker for rank tracking and Screaming Frog for site audits. Which one fits depends on the job you need done most: keyword research, rank tracking, audits, backlinks or AI search visibility.

This guide is for e-commerce and Shopify teams deciding whether to stay on Semrush, switch, or split the work across cheaper specialists. Instead of another feature dump, it is organized by job to be done. Every price and limit below comes from each vendor's own pricing page, checked on October 27, 2026, and we have not invented ratings or test scores. If you want our take on when Semrush itself is worth the money, read Semrush alternatives; for Ahrefs specifically, see Ahrefs alternatives.

Tools like Semrush at a glance

Semrush is an all-in-one suite: keyword research, competitor analysis, position tracking, site audits, backlinks and AI visibility tracking, which its Starter and Pro+ plans now bundle. A true alternative either covers most of those jobs at a different price point or does one job better. Here is the short list, with the entry price for a full SEO plan on monthly billing.

Annual billing lowers most of these prices: Semrush says up to 17% off, Ahrefs says up to 17%, SE Ranking and Moz say 20%, and AccuRanker says 10%. Screaming Frog is sold only as an annual license.

How to choose a Semrush alternative

Most teams don't need everything Semrush does. They need two or three jobs done well, every week, by the people who actually log in. Start by writing down which jobs you do weekly, which you do quarterly, and which you never do. The weekly jobs decide your main tool. The quarterly jobs can often be covered by a free tool or a one-month subscription.

Job to be doneQuestion to askWhat to check on the pricing pageRed flag
Keyword researchDo I need volume and difficulty for new topics, or just my own queries?Report or credit limits per day or monthDaily report caps you hit by Tuesday
Rank trackingHow many keywords, and how often do I need fresh positions?Tracked keywords and update frequencyWeekly updates when you report daily
Site auditsHow many URLs does my store have, including variants and filters?Pages crawled per month and per projectA crawl cap smaller than your catalog
BacklinksAm I researching competitors' links or just monitoring mine?Historical data window and export rowsShort history when you need trend lines
AI visibilityWhich AI engines matter, and how many prompts do I need to track?Prompts tracked, engines covered, update frequencyPrompt tracking sold as an expensive add-on you won't use

For e-commerce, two limits matter more than most buyers expect. The first is audit crawl capacity, because a Shopify store with thousands of products, variants and collection filters can generate far more URLs than its product count suggests. The second is tracked keywords, because a store that tracks category terms, product terms and brand terms across two countries burns through 500 keywords quickly.

Best for keyword research

Keyword research means finding what shoppers search for, how many search, and how hard it is to rank. Every all-in-one suite on this list does it. The differences are in limits and in how each tool fits the way you work.

Ahrefs

Ahrefs pairs its Keywords Explorer with competitor reports in Site Explorer, which makes it strong when your research starts from "what is this competitor ranking for that we aren't?" The Lite plan costs $129 a month and includes 1,000 credits per user, with 6 months of historical data. Standard ($249 a month) moves to unlimited credits and 2 years of history. Ahrefs also sells a Starter plan at $29 a month that it describes as a way to see what people search and research competitors, which can be enough for a founder doing occasional research.

SE Ranking

SE Ranking's Core plan ($129 a month, or $103.20 a month billed annually) lists unlimited keyword, competitor and backlink research, with a keyword database expansion limit of 17,500 on Core and 50,000 on Growth. For a small in-house team that wants research and daily tracking in one login, it is the value pick.

Moz Pro

Moz Pro Standard costs $99 a month ($79 billed yearly) and is positioned for small businesses that need the basics. Moz also offers an entry-level plan at $49 a month for individuals managing a single website. If keyword research is an occasional task rather than a daily one, Moz is the lowest entry price among the full suites here.

Before paying for any of them, mine the data you already own. Your Search Console queries report shows the real terms you already appear for. Our Search Console Quick Wins Analyzer takes that export and surfaces the near page one keywords worth targeting first, and the Keyword Cannibalization Checker flags queries where two of your pages compete.

Best for rank tracking

Rank tracking is where the tools differ most, because update frequency and keyword limits vary widely. If you report on rankings every week, weekly updates are fine. If you are watching a migration, a product launch or an algorithm update, you want daily data.

SE Ranking: the most tracked keywords per dollar among the suites

SE Ranking Core includes 2,000 keywords tracked daily for $129 a month, and Growth includes 5,000 for $279 a month. That is four times the tracked keywords of Semrush's SEO plan at a slightly lower monthly price, which is why it is our pick for stores that track a lot of category and product terms. It also lists a local and map rank tracker with 1,500 keywords on both plans.

AccuRanker: the specialist

AccuRanker does one job. Its Professional plan starts at €224 a month for 2,000 keywords with daily updates, with 3,000 and 5,000 keyword options, and its Expert plan starts at €764 a month for 10,000 to 25,000 keywords. It lists Google Search Console and Google Analytics integrations. Pair it with a cheaper research tool if you track thousands of keywords and need them fresh every day.

Ahrefs and Semrush

Ahrefs' pricing page lists weekly rank tracker updates on Lite, Standard and Advanced, with 750, 2,000 and 5,000 tracked keywords. Semrush tracks daily: 500 keywords on its SEO and Starter plans and 1,500 on Pro+. If daily movement matters to you, that difference alone can decide between the two.

Whatever you track, remember that a rank tracker reports one simulated position, while Search Console reports the average position real searchers saw. Use the tracker for trend lines and Search Console for the truth about clicks. Our guide to rank tracking software goes deeper on what to look for.

Best for site audits

A site audit crawls your store the way a search engine does and flags broken links, redirect chains, missing titles, duplicate content and indexing problems. For a Shopify store, this is where cheap tools often fall short, because crawl limits run out on large catalogs.

Screaming Frog SEO Spider

Screaming Frog is a desktop crawler and the specialist pick. The free version crawls up to 500 URLs. A paid license is £199 per user per year, with discounts for 5 or more licenses, and the crawl limit is described as unlimited, limited only by your machine's memory and storage. The paid version adds JavaScript rendering, scheduling, crawl comparison, structured data validation and Google Analytics, Search Console and PageSpeed Insights integrations. It is the most crawl per dollar on this list, but it takes more skill to read the output.

Crawl capacity inside the suites

If you would rather keep audits in your main platform, compare crawl limits against your real URL count:

  • Ahrefs: 100,000 crawl credits a month on Lite, 500,000 on Standard and 1.5 million on Advanced, with a maximum of 25,000, 50,000 and 250,000 pages per project.
  • SE Ranking: 250,000 audit pages a month on Core and 2 million on Growth, with a per-project maximum of 250,000 and 1 million.
  • Moz Pro: 400,000 pages crawled a month on Standard, 2 million on Medium and 5 million on Large.

For a quick check of one page before you commit to a crawler, our free Website SEO Checker grades titles, meta, headings, schema, links and indexability, and the Redirect Checker traces redirect chains. For what a full audit should cover, see what a technical SEO audit is.

Backlink research tells you who links to your competitors, which of their pages earn links, and where you have gaps. This is Ahrefs' best-known strength. Its pricing page lists 6 months of historical data on Lite, 2 years on Standard, 5 years on Advanced and unlimited history on Enterprise ($1,499 a month, annual commitment). If you need to show a link profile trend over several years, the history window matters more than the headline price.

SE Ranking includes backlink research and monitoring on both Core and Growth, with 6 months of historical data on Core and all-time history on Growth. Semrush includes competitor analysis on every paid plan and adds historical SEO data on Pro+.

For e-commerce, the most useful backlink report is usually "pages that earn links." Gift guides, sizing guides, original data and free tools earn links far more often than product pages, and seeing which formats work for competitors tells you what to build.

Best for AI search visibility

The newest job is tracking whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode mention or cite your brand. Every all-in-one suite on this list now sells some form of prompt tracking, but they count it differently, so read the units carefully.

Tool and planMonthly priceAI prompt tracking includedEngines or notes listed
Semrush Starter$19950 prompts tracked daily300 AI visibility reports per day, 1 domain
Semrush Pro+$299100 prompts tracked dailyMulti-location and device tracking
SE Ranking Core$129100 prompts tracked daily5 LLMs tracked
Moz Pro Standard$99150 tracked prompts, weeklyGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode
Ahrefs Lite$129150 checks on AI prompts per monthBrand Radar AI add-on from $199/mo

Note the units: Semrush and SE Ranking count prompts tracked every day, Moz counts prompts tracked weekly, and Ahrefs counts individual prompt checks per month. SE Ranking also sells a separate AI Search add-on at $89 a month that tracks 75 prompts daily across AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, ChatGPT and Copilot (listed as coming soon). Ahrefs' Brand Radar add-on starts at $199 a month and lets you research any brand across its prompt database.

A tracker tells you whether you are cited. It doesn't tell you why. To check whether a page is built to be quoted, run it through our free AEO Checker, which scores how ready a page is for ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews. Then use the tracker to see whether changes move your citations over the following weeks.

Free tools that cover the basics

Before you pay for any suite, set up the free tools. For many smaller stores they cover most weekly needs.

  • Google Search Console. The only source of your real Google clicks, impressions, CTR and average position. Google says Search Console keeps the last 16 months of data, and its tables show a maximum of 1,000 rows. Our Search Console tips show where to look first.
  • Ahrefs Free. Ahrefs says website owners get free, limited access to Site Explorer and Site Audit for their own site.
  • Screaming Frog free. Crawls up to 500 URLs, enough for a small store or a single section of a large one.
  • Semrush Free. One demo project and 10 reports a day across its main tools, useful for trying the interface before you buy.
  • QCK's free tools. Our Search Console analyzer, period comparison tool and CTR calculator run in your browser and turn Search Console exports into a prioritized list.

How to build your SEO tool stack

Most e-commerce teams end up with one paid suite plus one or two specialists. Here is how to get there without paying for overlapping tools.

  1. List your weekly jobs. Write down the reports you actually open every week. If nobody looks at backlink reports monthly, don't buy for backlinks.
  2. Count your URLs and keywords. Pull your sitemap URL count and decide how many keywords you need tracked across each country and device. These two numbers rule out plans quickly.
  3. Set up the free layer first. Connect Search Console and run a free crawl. This becomes your baseline and your source of truth for clicks.
  4. Pick one suite for your most frequent job. Rank tracking every day points to SE Ranking or Semrush. Competitor and link research points to Ahrefs. Occasional research on one site points to Moz Pro's lower tiers.
  5. Add a specialist only when a limit bites. If your catalog outgrows the suite's crawl cap, add Screaming Frog. If you need tens of thousands of keywords updated daily, add AccuRanker.
  6. Trial on real work. Most suites offer a trial or a free tier. Run the same three tasks in each (one keyword gap, one audit, one rank report) and compare how long each takes your team.
  7. Review the stack every 6 months. Vendors change plans often, and Semrush, Moz and SE Ranking now bundle AI visibility features into their plans, so recheck the pricing pages before every renewal.

Tools are not the strategy

Every tool on this list will tell you what is broken and what competitors rank for. None of them decides which fix makes the most money, writes the pages, or tests whether a change lifts revenue. That part is the work. If you'd rather have a team turn the data into a plan, with a benchmark against your top three competitors on Google and AI answers and the revenue math behind each fix, get in touch. Otherwise, start with the free layer this week and buy the suite that matches the job you do most often.

FAQ

Questions & answers

What is the best free tool like Semrush?
There is no free tool that matches Semrush's full suite. Google Search Console is the best free source for your own site's clicks and rankings, Screaming Frog crawls up to 500 URLs free, and Ahrefs Free gives site owners limited access to Site Explorer and Site Audit for their own site.
Is Ahrefs better than Semrush?
It depends on the job. Ahrefs is strongest for backlinks and competitor research, while Semrush updates tracked keywords daily and bundles AI visibility tracking into its Starter and Pro+ plans. Ahrefs lists weekly rank tracking updates on its main plans.
What is the cheapest alternative to Semrush?
Among full SEO suites, Moz Pro Standard is the lowest listed price at $99 a month ($79 billed yearly), and Moz also lists a $49 a month plan for a single website. Ahrefs sells a $29 a month Starter plan for basic keyword and competitor research.
Do I need a paid SEO tool for a Shopify store?
Small stores can get far with Search Console and a free crawler. A paid suite earns its cost once you track hundreds of keywords, research competitors regularly, or have more URLs than a free crawl covers.
Which Semrush alternative tracks AI search visibility?
SE Ranking, Moz Pro and Ahrefs all include some AI prompt tracking, and SE Ranking and Ahrefs sell larger AI add-ons. Each vendor counts prompts differently, so compare daily prompts, weekly prompts and monthly checks carefully.
